Navigating Federal AI Development During Presidential Transition
As the country shifts its focus to the leadership and priorities of President-elect Trump’s second administration, federal leaders continue to emphasize the importance of the nation’s development of artificial intelligence, especially as a matter of national security.
Trump’s “light touch” approach to AI
Trump’s first administration took the first steps in government to address AI, launching the nation’s first AI executive order that spurred the “American AI” initiative. This initiative focused on finding ways to promote and remove developmental barriers for AI and prioritized federal agencies’ investments in the tech. R Street Institute Resident Senior Fellow of Technology and Innovation Adam Thierer hypothesized Trump’s second administration may opt for a “light touch” approach to regulating AI.
Maintaining the nation’s AI lead
IARPA Director Rick Muller said that the nation’s leadership in AI between allies and partners will be critical in helping the country stay ahead of adversaries at GovCIO Media & Research’s inaugural AI Summit.
“The U.S. needs to have this expertise here. We can’t outsource this to other places. We need to understand every step in AI, in both the logical and the economic supply chains, that go into building and sustaining AI tool sets. Then, we need to understand safety and security in all of its implications,” Muller said.
Unpacking DOL’s nine AI workstreams
U.S. Department of Labor Chief AI Officer Mangala Kuppa joined HealthCast to discuss her agency’s priorities and policies around AI, which revolve around DOL’s nine AI workstreams. She also explained DOL’s AI workforce strategy and how the agency is bolstering collaboration to better develop an AI ecosystem.
DOE uses AI to support clean energy initiatives
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is training AI models to use data sets, enhance super computers and power electrical grids to explore the technology’s use for clean energy initiatives.
“There’s all the talk about how dangerous AI can be and there’s all this talk about how great AI can be ... We need to use AI for both offense and defense,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said at the NVIDIA AI Summit.
