The USA imposes tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China until fentanyl trafficking decreases

The White House has implemented 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on Chinese goods, effective Feb. 4, as a measure that will remain until these countries halt the production and illegal distribution of fentanyl into the USA. A strong first quarter may lead to a slowdown, with fourth-quarter trade potentially down 10%-12% as tariffs impact overall volume and weaken a previously strong year-end. (1)

Winter weather continues to be a major challenge for the freight industry

Winter weather remains a top disruptor in the freight industry. January rejection rates climbed from 6.6% to 8.7%, surpassing the 5.96% rise seen after hurricanes. Spot rates grew 12% year-over-year as storms hit key hubs like Dallas and Chicago, causing backlogs but leaving minimal long-term infrastructure damage. (2)

Plan Mexico seeks to strengthen regional supply chains

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum launched Plan México, a $1.4 billion package to enhance regional supply chains. With 28.5 billion pesos for fixed assets and 1.5 billion for innovation, it aims to boost jobs and reduce reliance on foreign products. Officials project 1.2% GDP growth for Mexico if 10% of North American imports shift regionally. (3)
