Brooke asks Senegal to take a stand against donkey skin trade

Brooke is asking Senegal to take a stand against the donkey skin trade, by hosting an event with the British Embassy.?

Brooke in West Africa was joined by journalists, activists and animal welfare advocates at the Embassy on 30 January 2025, to pledge their commitment to ending the slaughter of donkeys for their skins.??

The event also commemorated Brooke’s 90th anniversary and its founder, Dorothy Brooke, whilst marking the charity’s work in West Africa to tackle the skin trade.?

Caballito’s story: learning to trust again

Brooke told the story of Caballito, the "little horse" who lives on Ometepe Island with his owner, Ismelda, in Nicaragua.

Mistreated in the past, Caballito was afraid to interact with Ismelda. He didn’t want to get hurt again and his health was suffering.

With Brooke's help, Ismelda gave Caballito the care needed so that the?little horse became a happy horse.?

It takes time to trust, and by handling them with care, horses, donkeys and mules can lead better lives.

Emotional health in working animals

Brooke's Global Animal Welfare Advisor, Dr Jennifer Wathan, revealed the importance of emotional health in working animals, this Emotional Health Awareness Day on 25 February 2025.

Handling with compassion costs nothing and can be done anywhere in the world, making it a powerful way to generate good emotional health and improve quality of life for working animals.
