January has finally passed by.
As always it has felt like it dragged on for a lot longer than it did.
We are now on the other side and are looking forward to another fabulous February and then onto a magnificent March!
The importance of communication
First up, let’s get something clear - Communication is VITAL to the hiring process.
Even in 2024 we are still hear about the same issue from clients and candidates - that nobody is getting back to them.
For candidates, this is incredibly frustrating! When you’re looking for work your whole attention is focused on making sure you get a job.
So imagine the sheer frustration of never knowing what the answer is, or if an answer has been made, or even if they have received your CV.
Clients (and recruiters) - make sure you stay in regular contact throughout every step and stage of the process.
Even if the person doesn’t get the job, they are still likely to appreciate the fact they were kept in the loop the whole time.
Clients get frustrated when they don’t hear back from recruiters about potential candidates, or shortlisting/booking in for interviews and more.
Like so many things in life and business - communication is key!
The importance of employee wellbeing
How important is wellbeing in the workplace?
In our experience - extremely important.
While most people think of wellbeing as wholly physical, there is so much more to it.
And those who invest in it get the best employees and the best out of their employees.
And the numbers prove it.
For businesses looking to attract and retain the best talent in a more competitive recruitment market, company culture is crucial. This begins with championing mental health and putting worker wellbeing not only at the centre of your business.
For businesses that truly champion mental health and staff wellbeing, it can pay dividends. In fact, two-fifths (39 per cent) of employees across the economy have cited a decline in their mental health as a result of their employer not supporting their wellbeing during the pandemic, leading 30 per cent of respondents to search for a new job and a quarter to become less productive.
Meanwhile, across the UK as a whole, poor mental health costs employers up to £45 billion per year.
For both recruitment and retention to be successful, businesses need to offer the right kinds of support to their teams – including attractive CPD opportunities and wellbeing programmes.
Ultimately, not only is a company culture built around flexibility, mental health support and staff development good for people’s wellbeing, it is good for business – minimising costs, retaining staff, and helping to attract the best talent any sector has to offer.

Worker Shortages Affect Small Business the Most
Seven in 10 employers across the UK are still witnessing a shortage of all types of candidates for their roles, a survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) suggests.

More than four-in-five small employers (with less than 50 staff) involved in the survey reported shortages of candidates (81.5%). Despite a year of slower economic growth and lower overall hiring, this shows that the UK jobs market is still struggling to meet employers’ demand. The challenge facing policymakers and employers is to stop these ongoing candidate shortages constraining the economy if economic growth returns this year. A total of 57.1% of medium-size employers (50-249 staff) and 66.7% of large employers (with 250+ staff) reported shortages of candidates, which suggests that they are also challenged – but finding better routes to cope.

Increase In Hiring Fraud Due To Rise In ‘Reference Houses’
‘Reference houses’ that provide fake employment, education, bank and identity references for jobseekers are one of the latest types of hiring fraud occurring in the UK.
Digital hiring and screening expert Keith Rosser has told parliament members and employers at a recent All-Party Parliamentary Committee (APPG) meeting that the growing sophistication of deception of these reference houses are “really quite unprecedented”.
In addition to helping people cover up part of their past, reference houses also support modern slavery and can germinate opportunities for blackmail, for either personal or industrial purposes.
High performers dislike strict office attendance
High performers and millennials are the most likely to quit their jobs if firms enforce strict policies for a return to the office, research has found.
On average, according to the survey by global consultancy Gartner, employees’ “intent to stay” declined by 8% with strict return-to-office mandates. But among high-performing employees, intent to stay fell by 16% with these mandates. Among millennials and women, the intent to stay declined by 10% and 11%.
A number of surveys and announcements have indicated that more companies are pursuing policies of stricter office attendance.
