It seems fitting that Valentine's Day and American Heart Month are nestled together in the same month of February. This is a perfect time to focus on family, friends and the loved ones surrounding you. It's also a great time to become aware of lifestyle factors contributing to cardiovascular health. Even small changes can minimize risk of cardiovascular events!
Consider making one change this month. Maybe it's adding more green leafy vegetables to your diet. Or including fresh fruit with every meal. Perhaps there's a friend you've been meaning to catch up with, or a breathing exercise you've been wanting to include in your routine. Diet, exercise and social factors are important contributors to heart health. I always encourage my kids to "eat the rainbow"; counting the colors on their plates is something we love doing together. But realistically I don't always have the time or energy to serve them a well-rounded plate. Some nights, it's pizza or dino nuggets for the win! This month, I'm choosing to promote heart health by packing fruit every day in their lunches. That might mean they're getting raisins on Fridays because I'm out of steam!--- but I'm doing it. Think of one small change you can make this month. There's no better way to honor your loved ones this Valentine's Day than by prioritizing a healthy heart!
