Gold for top Irish researchers
On 29 February, Colm O’Reardon, Secretary General of the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science presented the 2024 Royal Irish Academy (RIA) Gold Medals at a ceremony hosted by Professor Pat Guiry, President of the RIA.
The 2024 RIA Gold Medal in the Engineering Sciences was awarded to Máire O’Neill MRIA, Regius Professor in Electronics and Computer Engineering, Director of the Centre for Secure Information Technologies CSIT and Director of the UK-wide Research Institute in Secure Hardware and Embedded Systems (RISE) at Queen's University Belfast .
Brigid Laffan MRIA, Emeritus Professor at Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies , European University Institute and UCD College of Social Sciences and Law , University College Dublin and Chancellor of University of Limerick received the 2024 RIA Gold Medal in the Social Sciences.
The RIA awards two Gold Medals annually to recognise and foster excellence in research which advances the public good, both nationally and internationally.

Call for nominations: Michel Déon Prize
The Royal Irish Academy’s Michel Déon Prize for non-fiction 2024 is now open for nominations until Monday, 8 April 2024.
The Michel Déon Prize?will be awarded to the author of the book that the judging panel consider to be the best work of nonfiction published in the previous two years from the eligible categories - autobiography, biography, cultural studies, history, literary studies, philosophy, travel. The winner will receive €10,000 and give the 'Michel Déon Lecture' in France in 2025.
Archaeology Grants schemes open
The Royal Irish Academy (RIA) recently opened applications for the Archaeology Research Grants?and Archaeology Radiocarbon Dates schemes. The schemes are open to archaeological researchers/archaeologists, including undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and PhD candidates. Applications for both schemes are welcomed until Friday, 29 March 2024. See details and apply
Nowlan Digitisation Grants scheme open
The RIA?seeks applications for this scheme which aims to expand the range of digitised historical and archaeological sources available through open and free access to researchers, for private study or education purposes. Applications close on Thursday, 11?April 2024.? See details and apply

R.J. Hunter Digital Fellowship?open
The RIA welcome applications from researchers with a background and track record in a relevant research area, namely research on aspects of Irish History, 1500-1800, who have obtained a PhD and wish to undertake an 18 month post-doctoral Fellowship to further develop the prosopographical database of British Settlers in the Ulster Plantation (1609-1700).
