Themes of the Week

Major System Observations:

  • American reduced June and July domestic capacity 7% week over week.?ORD domestic capacity is down 12% week over week for the month of July.
  • Alaska and Spirit modified their summer schedules while Frontier finalized their spring schedule.

Route Additions:

  • Allegiant added eight new nonstop routes.
  • Breeze added 22 new nonstop routes and one new city, PWM.
  • Spirit added 21 new routes and one new city, SJC.

Route Cuts:

  • Delta IAD to LGA cancelled from May 25 onward.
  • Frontier ATL to BUF and MDW to ONT were removed from future schedules.
  • Frontier reduced capacity in RDU 14% week over week in April.
  • Spirit AUS to MIA; BOS to DTW; and DFW to PNS were removed from future schedules.

Special Events:

  • Airlines continue to add special flights for the Kentucky Derby, but will they require everyone to wear ridiculous hats and bow ties?

Alaska adjusted summer and fall capacity this week. July domestic capacity was reduced 8% week over week. Five LAX and PDX routes were cancelled from September through November 16.

Allegiant announced this morning the addition of eight new nonstops starting this summer: ABE to DEN; ATW to PDX; OMA to AUS; AVL to PHX; CAK to MYR; LEX to LAS; PVU to MDW; and FSD to LAX. We are especially excited for six of our clients in this announcement! Congrats to ABE, ATW, AVL, CAK, LEX and OMA!

American filed new service from CAE to ORD starting July 5 and new summer seasonal service from AUS to PNS. American loaded special Kentucky Derby flights in May to SDF from AUS, IAH, JFK, LAX, PHX, RDU and STL. American reduced June and July domestic capacity 7% week over week. They cancelled DFW to SGU and AUS to STL from June through August 14 and PHX to Roswell (ROW) from May 5 through August 14. ORD domestic capacity is down 12% week over week for the month of July.

Breeze filed and announced new service in 22 markets and included a new city, Portland, ME (PWM).

Contour has extended service from several Essential Air Service (EAS) markets from May onward.

Delta cancelled IAD to LGA from May 25 onward. They also cancelled DCA to MCO and MIA from October through November 5.

Frontier removed ATL to BUF and MDW to ONT from all future schedules. They cancelled 26 markets in April and some beyond. Domestic capacity was reduced 4% week over week in April and May. In RDU, capacity was reduced 14% week over week in April.

Southern Airways filed and will take over the EAS contract in Burlington, IA (BRL) from Cape Air starting in April.

Southwest added Kentucky Derby flights from DAL to SDF and increased overall capacity from DEN to SDF in May.

Spirit filed and announced new SJU service from five markets: ATL, BDL, DFW, DTW and ORD starting in May. They also announced and filed service from a new city SJC to DFW, LAS and SAN starting June 7. They filed new service from BOS to CLT and IAH; CLT to LAX; DFW to OAK; EWR to DTW and TPA; LAS to RIC; LAX to MCO and SAT: MCI to SMF; MCO to PHX; and MYR to ROC. They also extended many routes to year-round. AUS to MIA; BOS to DTW; and DFW to PNS were removed from all future schedules. Several routes were also cancelled for the summer season.

United extended the EAS contract in IAH to Hattiesburg/Laurel (PIB) through early September. They filed new service from IAD to YYC from June through September.

TSA Update

February 1-19 is at 99.5% of 2019 levels and 121.0% of 2022 levels. Friday, February 17th was the 2nd busiest day since March 2020 at over 2.5 million travelers.
