Yesterday morning, two federal agents were killed and three others were injured during an incident that escalated while authorities were executing a search warrant at a home in Sunrise, FL. Officials say that at approximately 6:00am local time, authorities arrived at a residence to execute a federal court-ordered search warrant in a case involving violent crimes against children.
In a recent statement, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray said Special Agents Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger “immediately took rifle fire as soon as they breached the door.” Police said earlier Tuesday that the suspect was barricaded inside the home and that paramedics were on the scene. According to reports, a Broward Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was first to respond and extracted at least one of the injured agents.
Two agents with multiple gunshot wounds were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition. The third injured agent was treated at the scene and not hospitalized. During an afternoon press briefing, FBI Miami Special Agent in Charge George Piro said the suspect opened fire and allegedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot. The FBI did not provide any additional details of the case against the gunman, other than to say he was suspected of possessing illegal graphic images of children.
At this time, the shooting incident is under investigation by the FBI’s Inspection Division. The deaths of the two FBI agents and wounding of three others yesterday morning is the deadliest FBI shooting in the last 35 years.
