In this personal and intimate interview, we take a closer look at who Adriana is at the core and it is hard to believe that she was once a shy, short girl wearing braces.

Adriana believes that the ability to feel a character’s feelings, while writing about them, is key to a successful story. To cry, laugh, get angry and thrilled while writing is what makes the story resonate and it’s what makes the characters real.

She says, “My creative thinking process only ignites after a strong espresso and I need a lot more to sustain it. I love to write in the morning when my mind is clearer. I usually write in my office, but I can write anywhere when I’m feeling inspired. Sometimes I make notes on my phone because my ideas come from so many sources like my legal cases, observing people and from pure imagination. It is because I have attention deficit disorder that I want to do everything at once! Like when I was a kid, I wanted to be a pilot, an astronaut and a scientist all at the same time.”

Some of the challenges that Adriana has overcome as a writer include overcoming her own perfectionism. She says, “I write…read…change…change again, write again, read again…”

She adds that she mistakenly believed in a publisher who ended up being very dishonest. The struggle got real when she wanted the rights back to her work. She says, “I will never make that mistake again.”

To hone her craft as an author, Adriana believes strongly in reading. She says, “To read is the best way to improve my writing. I read books, news, everything I can find that interests me.”

Many people who achieve remarkable things often experience a change in the people around them, but for Adriana it is simple, she says that she did not see a difference in the way her friends behave, but there were some people who she didn’t really consider to be friends who became quite jealous. “If they are not my friends, I don’t need to bother myself with it,” she says.

If Adriana was a colour she says that she would be Red; the colour of passion, “I’m a passionate person with lots of Italian blood running through my veins. And I’m a Hunter and gatherer together. What’s the point in hunting if you can’t keep the results?

A dream of Adriana’s is to be able to live in Paris and write from her balcony while observing the Eiffel Tower. She says, “I try to follow my own rules, but I don’t expect others to be the same as me. I do believe, though that ethics and loyalty are great rules the entire world should follow.”

Adriana is inspired by her love for telling stories, life in general and people; so many different personalities, life stories and tragedies. She sees humankind as very inspirational. She says, “As a lawyer I tell stories to defend my clients, as a writer I tell stories I would like to read in a book. I love criminal series like Criminal Minds or any investigative sort of programs. I love to solve puzzles and when I’m faced with a mystery, I start watching and my mind begins making its calculations.”

Adriana says that her father is her favorite hero because of his honesty and because he always does the right thing. One thing that Adriana finds unforgivable is being disloyal to a friend. There simply is no coming back from that.

When asked about herself, she says, “I believe it’s important to have a great sense of humour. I always find reasons to laugh, I can see fun in everything, even tragedies often carry some element of comedy.” In the free time that she has, which isn’t much, she loves to spend time with her friends, to cook for them and to play with her dogs, to read and to watch movies and series. She is no stranger to adventure, but one thing that she did find very physically challenging was night diving, she says, “It was very terrifying for me.”

She adds, “I love to learn and I believe we have to learn everything we can, it doesn’t matter if it seems useless, it is knowledge and might be useful one day. I love to teach the things I know to others, and I believe I help people grow by sharing my knowledge with them.”

The best book that she read this year was The Reluctant Empress. A biography about Sissi, an Austrian Empress, that traces the fame and adulation of one of the nineteenth century's most popular women, from her carefree youth in the woods of Bavaria to her strange new life where she is married to Emperor Franz Joseph and has no freedom. It depicts so clearly that a cage is always a cage, even if the bars are made from gold.

Adriana is dedicated and determined and she never gives up. She always makes a point to celebrate her victories with a good wine and the great company of close friends.

When it comes to writing advice, Adriana says, “Don’t think about pleasing your readers, please yourself and you will write a terrific book. Remember that you can’t please everyone so don’t take things too personally. One guy wrote on Facebook that I am the devil and my books are deep fantasies of devious. I just blocked him.”

Adriana admits that she makes many important decisions every day, but one of the most important as a writer is “to kill or not to kill” a great character.

Her books, Behind the Door, Lara’s Journal, and the Brilliant Game are available from Amazon in hard copy as well as on Kindle.
