Featured this month: transatlantic cooperation on air safety

At the 2024 International Aviation Safety Conference held in Washington in June, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) announced a commitment to working closely together to meet the challenges of a fast-evolving aviation industry, and the increasing speed of development of future technologies.

ASD issued a statement, alongside Airlines for Europe (A4E) , the Aerospace Industries Association , and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), welcoming the commitment.

Discussing non-CO2 emissions at the Berlin Airshow

At the ILA Berlin Airshow in June, ASD’s Civil Aviation Director Vincent De Vroey moderated a panel discussion on the aviation sector's efforts to understand and address non-CO2 emissions and their impact on climate change.

By collaborating with research institutions, universities, and key stakeholders, the industry is deepening its understanding of this issue, and developing effective solutions.

“The aviation sector is committed to reduce its environmental footprint based on science and a holistic approach addressing both CO2 and non-CO2!” Vincent De Vroey.

What happened when an aircraft carrier changed its 27,000 lightbulbs?

This month’s Did You Know article looks at what happened when the 27,000 lightbulbs on the Royal Navy’s HMS Queen Elizabeth were changed to LEDs. The switch not only reduced the energy consumption of lighting the ship but also significantly decreased the amount of heat generated by the lightbulbs. By switching to LEDs, which emit much less heat, the ship was able to reduce the overall need for air conditioning, leading to a significant 12% reduction in energy use for cooling.
