Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD)
ASD is the voice of European Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries.
The European Defence & Security Summit held on 17 April proved to be a powerful day of reflection on the security challenges facing Europe.
More than two years since the start of Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine, the opening panel of the Summit looked at Europe’s track record in supporting Ukraine on the battlefield and beyond. In the discussion, Oleksandr Kamyshin, Minister for Strategic Industries of Ukraine said “For a long time, our defence industry in Ukraine has been neglected. Now, we are rising from the ashes to the highest NATO standards.”
Emphasizing what is at stake, Nathalie Loiseau, Chair of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence, European Parliament said: “We need Ukraine to win this war, if not out of solidarity and generosity, for our own security.”
And in her speech, Ursula von der Leyen, EU Commission President, spoke on the need for a strong European defence technological and industrial base in a world that has shifted towards open confrontation: “The world is as dangerous as it has been for generations. And Europe is in the middle of it. This is why it is time for a European awakening on defence and security. Our freedom and our prosperity depend on our security. And we have to bring our actions in line with the changing security environment.”
In the final speech of the Summit, Estonian Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, spoke powerfully on the new defence and security realities facing Europe, saying that “We have a very real threat to defend against. Europe is facing a critical moment that will shape our future for decades. We need to ramp up our defence industry and spending. With the right resolve and united effort, I believe we can succeed.”

Key discussions on finance and sustainability at ASD convention
ASD’s Convention in Vienna on 16-17 May, hosted by WKO/ASW and AI Austria, concluded with two panel discussions on key topics in our sector.
?Finance challenges: Experts discussed the defence industry’s access to finance, emphasising the need for support from both state-owned and private institutions, including the European Investment Bank (EIB). Industry panelists recognised the EIB’s recent lending policy changes as a step in the right direction, but called again for the scrapping of the EIB’s exclusion of pure defence activities, saying this would send a positive signal to other investors.
Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF): Another key topic was the role of SAF in achieving net zero emissions in aviation. The panel agreed that in order to safeguard European aviation sector competitiveness, a level playing field globally, including a harmonised regulatory framework – is urgently needed.
