The Feast of Yom Kippur (Tishri 10 - September 30th)

Hello Friends,
In 2017, the Feast of Yom Kippur occurs this Saturday, September 30th (Tishri 10). Yom Kippur is also known as the Day of Atonement, which, on God’s appointed year, will be the day when Messiah returns to Earth for His second coming and redeems the nation of Israel. In Leviticus 23, the Lord prophesied about Messiah’s first and second coming events through His seven feasts (divine appointments), including Yom Kippur, which is the sixth feast of the Lord. In other words, the Almighty preordained specific dates when Messiah would fulfill His first and second coming events, which places a supreme value on having a basic understanding of God's calendar.

Leviticus 23:1-2, “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The feasts of the LORD, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are MY feasts.”
In Hebrew, the word for feasts is “Mo’ed,” which means a divine appointment (Strong’s #4150), and the Hebrew word for holy convocations is “Miqra,” which means a dress rehearsal (Strong’s #4744). Now, let us substitute the original context and meaning of these words into the text.
Leviticus 23:1-2, “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The divine appointments of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be dress rehearsals, these are My divine appointments.”
In Leviticus 23, the Lord commanded Moses to prophesy about His feasts, or divine appointments. Please note, these are God’s feasts! The Almighty declares that His feasts are His divine appointments, and He commands them to be “dress rehearsals,” which means they are to be celebrated each and every year. In doing so, His children (you and me) can understand when His Son, Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, will intercede with mankind and human history. Amazingly, the Lord’s seven feasts validate that He preordained His Son’s first and second coming events in perfect correlation with them.

Just as the four fulfilled spring feasts occurred in the exact order of Leviticus 23, so will the three unfulfilled fall feasts, as the Feast of Trumpets represent “repentance,” the Feast of Yom Kippur, “redemption,” and the Feast of Tabernacles, “rejoicing.” Most certainly, repentance has to come before redemption, and only after redemption is there rejoicing! Please note, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) is not the same as the Feast of Passover. Passover, which is the day Messiah was crucified, was for our individual redemption. The Feast of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) is for Israel’s national redemption at His second coming.
Now, let us proceed with God’s proclamation of the Feast of Yom Kippur.
Leviticus 23:27, “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Also the tenth day of this seventh month (Tishri 10) shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation (dress rehearsal) for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.”
God declared the Hebrew date of Tishri 10 (September 30th) as the Day of Atonement, and He proclaims, “it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations.” Why does God want believers, Jews and Gentiles, to rehearse, celebrate, and proclaim the Feast of Yom Kippur every year throughout the generations?
First and foremost, He commanded us to keep His feasts in Leviticus 23. Again, it is very imperative to understand that the Lord’s seven feasts are His feasts. Therefore, if you are saved in Jesus (Yeshua) the Messiah, then you are “grafted into” the commonwealth of the Israel of God (Rom. 11, Eph. 2:11-13, Gal. 6:16) and are included in the promises of the everlasting covenants (Gal. 3:26-29). Accordingly, since we are "grafted in," believing Jews and Gentiles should celebrate and proclaim the Lord's feasts. Secondly, according to the Holy Bible, Yom Kippur is the specific day, which, on God’s appointed year, Messiah will return for His second coming.
Now, let us explore the prophetic foreshadows of the Feast of Yom Kippur, and how it correlates with Messiah’s ultimate fulfillment of this feast (divine appointment) at His second coming.
The first Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) occurred after the Exodus from Egypt at Mount Sinai. While Moses received the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai, the children of Israel made and worshiped a golden calf (Ex. 32). When Moses descended from the mountain and discovered their sin, in his anger, he broke the tablets. Nevertheless, he returned to God on Mount Sinai in order to make atonement for their sin.
Exodus 32:30-33, “Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin. Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.” And the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.”
Moses returned to God on Mount Sinai to make atonement for the children of Israel on the Hebrew date of Elul 1. On the Hebrew calendar, the month of Elul is the month of repentance, and it preludes the holiest month of the year, Tishri (seventh month), which is when all three fall feasts occur. Moses was on Mount Sinai forty days and forty nights, and he made atonement for the children of Israel and received the new tablets of the Ten Commandments (Ex. 34:28). Please note, forty days from Elul 1 is Tishri 10, which is the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).Exodus 34:29-30, “Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him. So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.”
Accordingly, the forty days from Elul 1 (August 23) to Tishri 10 (September 30) is known as the “time of testing.” At the beginning of Messiah’s earthly ministry, we can understand how the “time of testing” connects with the Feast of Yom Kippur, as well.
Once John the Baptist baptized Messiah (Luke 3:21-22), He was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert to be tempted by Satan for forty days and forty nights (Luke 4:1-13). This time of testing commenced on Elul 1 and ended on Tishri 10, which is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement! Luke records that Messiah went into the synagogues on Yom Kippur to teach after His “time of testing” (Luke 4:14-15), which fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy.
Isaiah 61:1-2, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn.”
Messiah partially fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy right after His temptation by Satan in the desert on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
Luke 4:1-2, “Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.”
Luke 4:14-21, “Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord (Isa. 61:1-2).” Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Messiah fulfilled the first part of Isaiah’s prophecy at His first coming, however, He did not fulfill the last part of the prophecy. Did you see where Messiah ended the Scripture? In Isaiah 61:1-2, the prophet declares, “to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God.” However, in Luke 4:14-21, Messiah concluded with, “to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,” and He closed the book. Messiah did not finish by declaring, “the day of vengeance of our God.” This explains the “day of vengeance,” which is Messiah’s second coming, will also occur on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
Just as Moses atoned for the sins of the nation of Israel on the first Yom Kippur at Mount Sinai, Messiah will “atone and redeem” the nation of Israel on Yom Kippur (Tishri 10), the Day of Atonement, at His second coming. Remember, Messiah has atoned for all of mankind’s individual sins at Passover. However, as a nation, Israel will not be redeemed until Messiah’s second coming.
Now, let us explore and discover the prophetic foreshadows of Yom Kippur in the Torah and the Biblical prophets, and how this feast (divine appointment) correlates with the book of Revelation and Messiah’s second coming.
Leviticus 16:12-15, “Then he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from the altar before the Lord, with his hands full of sweet incense beaten fine, and bring it inside the veil. And he shall put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of incense (prayers - Psalm 141) may cover the mercy seat that is on the Testimony, lest he die.”
It is important to note the high priest was only allowed to go into the Holy of Holies (veil) once a year, which occurred on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). The high priest would follow the instructions in Leviticus 16, which are specifically for the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). In Revelation, we can find the correlation of this event at Messiah’s second coming.
Revelation 6:9-10, 8:3-6, “When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth? Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand" (Lev. 16:12-15).
We can see the similarities of the high priest’s ceremonies in Leviticus to the ultimate fulfillment in Revelation. This is an incredible event that the One and Only High Priest, Yeshua (Jesus), will be performing on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement (Heb. 7:11-19).
Additionally, the high priests would only wear white linens on Yom Kippur (Lev. 16), and they would stain their garments with blood as they sacrificed the animals for the nation of Israel's atonement. Isaiah and John prophesies about Messiah, The High Priest, staining His white garments at His second coming on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
Isaiah 63:1-4, “Who is this who comes from Edom (Jordan/Saudia Arabia), with dyed garments from Bozrah (Jordan), this One (Messiah) who is glorious in His apparel, traveling in the greatness of His strength?— “I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.” Why is Your apparel red, and Your garments like one who treads in the winepress? “I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no one was with Me. For I have trodden them in My anger, and trampled them in My fury; Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, and I have stained all My robes. For the day of vengeance is in My heart, and the year of My redeemed (Israel) has come” (See Isa. 61:2, Rev. 14:18).
Revelation 19:11-13, ”Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He (Messiah) who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.”
Isaiah and John are prophesying about the same event. The Lord proclaims, “the day of vengeance is in my heart, and the year of My redeemed (Israel) has come,” which will occur at Messiah’s second Coming, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). Remember, “the day of vengeance” in Isaiah 61:1-2 occurs on Yom Kippur, and Isaiah 63 places Messiah on earth at His second coming, correlating these events as the same event.
As briefly discussed, in Leviticus, the high priest was commanded to only entered the Holy of Holies once a year, which was the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).
Leviticus 16:2,34, “And the Lord said to Moses: “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat. This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, once a year (Yom Kippur).”
John validates that Messiah will fulfill this prophetic foreshadow at His second coming, which will be on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
Revelation 11:15-19, “Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever (Second Coming)!” And the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying: “We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was and who is to come, because You have taken Your great power and reigned. The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come (Second Coming), and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, and those who fear Your name, small and great, and should destroy those who destroy the earth. Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple."
The Torah also explains a “dress rehearsal” from the high priest in order for us to understand the Yom Kippur sacrifice.
Leviticus 16:16-17, “So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tabernacle of meeting which remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness. There shall be no man in the tabernacle of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.”
We see similar language in the book of Revelation, which is a direct correlation to the Yom Kippur sacrifice in Leviticus 16.
Revelation 15:8, “The temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from His power, and no one was able to enter the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.”
Please note, Messiah prophesied that Israel’s house would be left desolate and their national redemption would not occur until they say, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord (Buruch Haba Beshem Addonai) (Matthew 23:38). This will occur on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, when the Lord returns for His second coming. Then, and only then, will Israel’s national redemption be fulfilled. Remember, Yom Kippur symbolizes redemption.
2 Corinthians 3:13-16, “Unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.”
The veil over the face of the nation of Israel will be lifted by Messiah on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. As a nation, “their eyes will be opened” to accept Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah.
How will this occur?
Jeremiah 31:33-34, “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
The Lord Himself will put His instructions (Torah) on their hearts as a nation, and He will be their God, and they will be His people! To be clear, just as Paul proclaims in 2 Corinthians 3:12-16, the Jewish people who believe in Yeshua before His second coming, “the veil has already been taken away.” To have an “unveiled face” means to understand that Jesus is the Messiah of all mankind. Please note, some Gentiles (non-Jewish) have a veil over their eyes, as well (people who do not believe in Jesus).
As believers in the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua (Jesus), we need to “remove our veil” to understand God’s eternal and everlasting plan for the nation of Israel and the Jewish people. In doing so, we will be able to help them “remove their veil” to understand that Yeshua is the prophesied Jewish Messiah (Rom. 11:11,14).
As we discussed, the high priest could only speak with God “face to face” in the holy of holies one day each year, which was the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur (Lev. 16). The prophet Ezekiel provides great insight into this “face to face” meeting, as well.
Ezekiel 20:33-35, “As I live,” says the Lord God, “surely with a mighty hand, with an outstretched arm (Messiah), and with fury poured out, I will rule over you (Second Coming/Millennial Reign). I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand (Messiah), with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out. And I will bring you into the deserts of the peoples, and there I will plead My case with you face to face.” (Also see Zech. 12:10, John 19:37, Rev. 1:7)
Hosea prophesied that Messiah would return to heaven after His first coming (Acts 1), which occurred approximately 2,000 years ago. He also proclaimed that at the end of the age, the Jewish people would accept their Jewish Messiah, which will occur during the great tribulation period, the time of Jacob’s (Israel) trouble (Jeremiah 30, Revelation 6-19).
Hosea 5:15, “I will return again to My place (after the First Coming) till they acknowledge their offense (Jews). Then they will seek My face; In their affliction (great tribulation) they will earnestly seek Me. Come, and let us (Jews) return to the Lord; For He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up.”
The apostle Paul clearly explains God’s sovereign, righteous, and divine plan of salvation for Jews and Gentiles.
Romans 11:25-29, “For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion (Jerusalem), and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; For this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins. Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable (everlasting covenants).”
In conclusion, I hope you will join us on Yom Kippur (Sept. 30th) to pray for the nation of Israel's veil to be lifted. As believers, we have been “atoned” for by Yeshua (Passover), but He will not return for His second coming until the nation of Israel accepts Him as their Messiah and proclaims, "Buruch Haba Beshem Adonnai (Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord)." (Matt. 23:38-39). Therefore, on the Feast of Yom Kippur, I hope you join us in prayer for the nation of Israel to accept Yeshua as their Messiah.
Romans 10:11, “Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved.”
Psalm 122: 6-9, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, prosperity within your palaces.” For the sake of my brethren and companions, I will now say, “Peace be within you.” Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek your good." Amen, Amen, and Amen!
In God's Prophetic Timeline, Messiah's Final Warning, we explore in great detail the supreme prophetic importance of Yom Kippur, which includes three major battles that will culminate on Messiah's day of vengeance at His second coming. We also discover God's prophetic timeline from the 1948 prophecy unto the 1967 prophecy, on through Daniel's four prophesied kingdoms that will rise to power before Messiah's second coming and millennial reign.
