The Feast of Yom Kippur

In 2016, the Feast of Yom Kippur begins on the evening of October 11th (Tishri 9) and ends on the evening of October 12th (Tishri 10). Yom Kippur is also known as the Day of Atonement, which is the day on God’s calendar* when Messiah will return to Earth for His Second Coming and redeem the nation of Israel. In Leviticus 23, the Lord prophesied about Messiah’s First and Second Coming events through “His feasts,” including Yom Kippur, which is the sixth feast of the Lord. 

The Seven Feasts of the Lord- Leviticus 23

The Four Spring Feasts-Fulfilled at Messiah's First Coming

  1. Passover (Died) - (Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 18-19)
  2. Unleavened Bread (Buried) - (Matthew 27:57-61, Mark 15:42-47, Luke 23:50-56, John 19:38-42)
  3. FirstFruits (Resurrected) - (Matthew 28:1-7, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-12, John 20:1-10)
  4. Shavuot/Pentecost (Holy Spirit poured out) - (Acts 2)

The Three Fall Feasts-Unfulfilled (Will be fulfilled in exact order at Messiah's Second Coming events on God’s appointed year)

  1. Trumpets (The day of the awakening blast, seven-year tribulation, the opening of the books/gates, the hidden day, the wedding of the Messiah, and the coronation of the Messiah) 
  2. Yom Kippur (Second Coming) - Sixth Feast
  3. Tabernacles (Millennial Reign)

Just as the four fulfilled spring feasts occurred in the exact order of Leviticus 23, so will the three unfulfilled fall feasts, as the Feast of Trumpets represent “repentance,” the Feast of Yom Kippur “redemption,” and the Feast of Tabernacles "rejoicing!” Clearly, repentance has to come before redemption, and only after redemption is there rejoicing! 

Please note, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) is not the same as the Feast of Passover. Passover, which is the day when Messiah was crucified, was for our individual redemption. The Feast of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) is for Israel's national redemption at His Second Coming, as we will discover later. Now, let us begin with God’s proclamation of the Feast of Yom Kippur. 

Leviticus 23:27, "And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Also the tenth day of this seventh month (Tishri 10) shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation (rehearsal) for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings."


God declared the Hebrew date of Tishri 10 (October 12) as the Day of Atonement, and He proclaims, “it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations.” As we discussed in last week’s article, the Feast of Trumpets,** a "holy convocation" means a “dress rehearsal” (Miqra-Strong’s #4744). Why does God want believers, Jews and Gentiles, to rehearse, celebrate, and proclaim the Feast of Yom Kippur every year throughout the generations?

First of all, He commanded us to keep His feasts in Leviticus 23. It is very important to understand that the Lord’s seven feasts are His feasts, not the Jewish people's feasts, not Israel’s feasts, but His feasts. So, if you are saved in Jesus the Messiah, then you are “grafted into” (Romans 11) the commonwealth of the Israel of God (Ephesians 2:11-13, Galatians 6:16) and are also included in the promises of the everlasting covenants (Galatians 3:26-29), and thus should celebrate and proclaim His feasts! Secondly, according to the Holy Bible, Yom Kippur is the specific day on God’s appointed year that Messiah will return for His Second Coming! 

Now, let us explore the prophetic foreshadows of the Feast of Yom Kippur, and how it correlates with Messiah’s ultimate fulfillment of this feast (divine appointment- Mo’ed - Strong’s #4150) at His Second Coming.

The first Yom Kippur occurred after the Exodus from Egypt at Mount Sinai. While Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai, the children of Israel made a golden calf (Exodus 32). When Moses descended from the mountain and discovered their sin, in his anger, he broke the tablets. Nevertheless, he returned to God on Mount Sinai in order to make an atonement for their sin. 

Exodus 32:30-33, "Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin. Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.” And the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book."


Moses returned to God on Mount Sinai to make atonement for the children of Israel on the Hebrew date of Elul 1. The month of Elul (ninth month) is the month of repentance, as it comes before the holiest month of the year, Tishri (tenth month), which is when all three fall feasts occur. Moses was on Mount Sinai forty days and forty nights, making atonement for the children of Israel and receiving the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28). So, forty days from Elul 1 is Tishri 10, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur)! 

Exodus 34:29-30, "Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him. So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him."

The forty days from Elul 1 to Tishri 10 (Yom Kippur) is known as the “time of testing.” *** At the beginning of Messiah’s earthly ministry, we find the "time of testing” and the Feast of Yom Kippur, as well. 

When John the Baptist baptized Messiah (Luke 3:21-22), He was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert to be tempted by Satan for forty days and forty nights (Luke 4:1-13). The forty days began on Elul 1 and ended on Tishri 10, which is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement! Luke records that Messiah went into the synagogues on Yom Kippur to teach after His “time of testing"(Luke 4:14-15), which fulfilled biblical prophecy.

Isaiah 61:1-2, "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn."

Messiah partially fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy right after His temptation by Satan in the desert on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. 

Luke 4:1-2, "Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry."

Luke 4:14-21, "Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

Messiah fulfilled the first part of Isaiah’s prophecy at His First Coming, however, He did not fulfill the last part of the prophecy. Did you see where Messiah ended the Scripture? In Isaiah 61:1-2, the prophet declares, “to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God.” However, in Luke 4:14-21, Messiah concluded with, “To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,” and He closed the book. Messiah did not finish by stating, “the day of vengeance of our God.” This tells us that the “day of vengeance,” which is Messiah’s Second Coming, will occur on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, as well! 

Just as Moses atoned for the sins of the nation of Israel on the first Yom Kippur at Mount Sinai, Messiah will “atone and redeem" the nation of Israel on Yom Kippur (Tishri 10), the Day of Atonement at His Second Coming. Remember, Messiah has atoned for all of mankind's individual sins at Passover. However, as a nation, Israel will not be redeemed until Messiah's Second Coming. 

Now, let us explore and discover the prophetic foreshadows of Yom Kippur in the Torah and the Biblical prophets, and how it correlates with the book of Revelation and Messiah’s Second Coming on Yom Kippur. 

Leviticus 16:12-15, "Then he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from the altar before the Lord, with his hands full of sweet incense beaten fine, and bring it inside the veil. And he shall put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of incense (prayers) may cover the mercy seat that is on the Testimony, lest he die.

The high priest was only allowed to go into the Holy of Holies (veil) once a year, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). Also, in Psalms 141:2, prayers are likened to incense (Psalms 141:2). In Revelation, we can see the correlation of this event at Messiah’s Second Coming. 

Revelation 6:9-10, "When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"

Revelation 8:3-6, "Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake. So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound."

We can see the similarities of the high priest's ceremonies in Leviticus to the ultimate fulfillment in Revelation. This is a divine appointment that the One and Only High Priest, Messiah, will be performing on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement (Hebrews 7:11-19). 

Also, the high priests would only wear white linens on Yom Kippur (Leviticus 16), and they would stain their garments with blood as they sacrificed the animals for atonement. Isaiah and John prophesies about Messiah, the High Priest, staining His white garments at His Second Coming on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. 

Isaiah 63:1-4, "Who is this who comes from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah, this One who is glorious in His apparel, traveling in the greatness of His strength?— “I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save (Messiah).” Why is Your apparel red, and Your garments like one who treads in the winepress? “I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no one was with Me. For I have trodden them in My anger, And trampled them in My fury; Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, And I have stained all My robes. For the day of vengeance is in My heartand the year of My redeemed (Israel) has come."

Revelation 19:11-13, " Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God."

Revelation 14:18, "And another angel came out from the altar, who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe (winepress)."

Clearly, Isaiah and John are prophesying about the same event. The Lord proclaims, “the day of vengeance is in my heart, and the year of My redeemed (Israel) has come,” which is Messiah's Second Coming, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). Remember, “the day of vengeance” in Isaiah 61:1-2 occurs on Yom Kippur, and Isaiah 63 places Messiah on earth at His Second Coming, correlating these events as one. 

Leviticus 16:2,34, “And the Lord said to Moses: “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat. This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, once a year."

As we discussed, the high priest only entered the Holy of Holies once a year. John gives us great insight into this prophetic foreshadow of Messiah’s Second Coming on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. 

Revelation 11:15-19, "Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever (Second Coming)!” And the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying: “We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was and who is to come, because You have taken Your great power and reigned. The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come (Second Coming), and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, and those who fear Your name, small and great, and should destroy those who destroy the earth. Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail."

The Torah also gives us a "rehearsal" from the high priest in order for us to understand the Yom Kippur sacrifice.

Leviticus 16:16-17, " So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tabernacle of meeting which remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness. There shall be no man in the tabernacle of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel."

We see similar language in the book of Revelation, which is a direct correlation to the Yom Kippur sacrifice in Leviticus 16. 

Revelation 15:8, "The temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from His power, and no one was able to enter the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed."

Messiah prophesied that Israel's house would be left desolate, and their national redemption would not occur until they say, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord (Buruch Haba Beshem Addonai).” 

Matthew 23:38, "See!, your house is left desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord."

This will occur on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, when the Lord returns for His Second Coming. Then, and only then, will Israel's national redemption be fulfilled. Remember, Yom Kippur symbolizes redemption.

2 Corinthians 3:13-16, " Unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away."

The veil over the face of the nation of Israel will be lifted by Messiah on Yom Kippur. As a nation, "there eyes will be opened" to accept Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah. How will this occur?

Jeremiah 31:33-34, "But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

The Lord Himself will put His instructions (Torah) on their heart as a nation, and He will be their God, and they will be His people! As believers, we can relate to this Scripture, as this is how we have come to be saved, as well. To be clear, just as Paul proclaims in 2 Corinthians 3:12-16, the Jewish people who believe in Jesus as the Messiah before His Second Coming, "the veil has already been taken away." To have an "unveiled face" means to understand that Jesus is the Messiah of all mankind. Please note, some Gentiles (non-Jewish) have a veil over their eyes, as well (people who do not believe in Jesus). On God’s appointed year, on Yom Kippur, He will lift the veil from all nations and from all people!

Isaiah 25:7-8, "And He will destroy on this mountain the surface of the covering cast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces; The rebuke of His people (Israel) He will take away from all the earth; For the Lord has spoke." 

Revelation 21:4, "God will wipe away every tear from their eyes there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

As believers in Messiah, we need to “remove our veil" (1 Corinthians 13:12) and understand God's eternal and everlasting plan for the nation of Israel and the Jewish people. In doing so, we will be able to help them “remove their veil" and understand that Yeshua is the Messiah. As we discussed, the high priest could only speak with God "face to face" on one day each year, which was the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur (Leviticus 16). The prophets Ezekiel, Zechariah, and John give us great insight into the “face to face” meeting, as well. 

Ezekiel 20:33-35, "As I live,” says the Lord God, “surely with a mighty hand, with an outstretched arm (Messiah), and with fury poured out, I will rule over you (Second Coming/Millennial Reign). I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand (Messiah), with an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out. And I will bring you into the deserts of the peoples, and there I will plead My case with you face to face."

Zechariah 12:10,"And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn." 

John 19:37, "And again another Scripture says, they shall look on Him whom they have pierced."

Revelation 1:7, "Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen."

As believers, we need pray for the nation of Israel's veil to be lifted, as the Lord will not return for His Second Coming until the Jewish people say, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” The prophet Hosea also prophesies about Yom Kippur, as well. 

Hosea 5:15,"I will return again to My place (after the First Coming) till they acknowledge their offense (Jews). Then they will seek My face; In their affliction (great tribulation) they will earnestly seek Me. Come, and let us (Jews) return to the Lord; For He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up."

Hosea prophesied that Messiah would return to heaven after His First Coming (Acts 1), and the Jewish people will accept Messiah during their affliction, which will take place during the great tribulation period, the time of Jacob's (Israel) trouble (Jeremiah 30:7, Revelation 6-19).

Matthew 23:37-39, "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!"

As believers, we have been "atoned" for by Messiah (John 3:16), but He will not come back for His Second Coming until the nation of Israel accepts Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah and proclaims those words. So, on the Feast of Yom Kippur, we need to pray for the nation of Israel to accept Jesus as their Messiah. The apostle Paul clearly explains the purpose of the Jews and Gentiles in God's sovereign, divine plan.

Romans 11:25-29, "For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion (Jerusalem), And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; For this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins. Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable."

Messiah told the Jewish people in Matthew 23 (above) that their house would be desolate, and they would see him no more until they recognized Him as the Messiah. In Romans 11, Paul states this partial blindness will last, "until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in." The fullness of the Gentiles will be when the seven year tribulation begins (Feast of Trumpets), and then Messiah will deliver them on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), the last day of the seven year tribulation. We see that the Jewish people are "beloved” by God, because of His everlasting promise made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (their gifts and the calling of God is irrevocable). As believers, it is very important for us to pray for the nation of Israel and the holy city of Jerusalem.

Romans 10:11, "Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved."

Acts 3:17-21, "Yet now, brethren, I know that you did it in ignorance, as did also your rulers (crucify Jesus). But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send Jesus Christ (on Yom Kippur), who was preached to you before, whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began."

Some Christians believe that God made the New Covenant with the Gentiles, however, it is a covenant God promised to the nation of Israel, which confirms the Abrahamic (Genesis 15,17) and Davidic Covenants (2 Samuel 7). Gentiles are "grafted into” the New Covenant (Romans 11) and are included into the commonwealth of the Israel of God (Ephesians 2:11-13, Galatians 6:16), and heirs to the everlasting promises (Galatians 3:26-29).

Jeremiah 31:31-36, "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not according to the covenant (Mosaic Covenant) that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days (Messiah), says the Lord: I will put My Torah in their minds, and write it on their hearts (Holy Spirit Acts 2); and I will be their God, and they shall be My people (Israel of God). No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more (Yom Kippur).” Thus says the Lord, Who gives the sun for a light by day, the ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, who disturbs the sea, and its waves roar (The Lord of hosts is His name): “If those ordinances depart from before Me, says the Lord, then the seed of Israel shall also cease from being a nation before Me forever."

The New Covenant is clearly promised to the nation of Israel, and believers are "grafted into" Israel's tree. Please see Romans 11. Some churches believe we have a separate covenant, but that is inaccurate. There is one “olive tree,” which is Israel, and all believers, Jews and Gentiles, are grafted into it. Israel, as a nation, will be "re-grafted" into it on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. (Romans 11). The Lord confirms this as He proclaims, "if the sun, the moon, and the stars depart from Him, then this would be the only way the nation of Israel would not be saved.” Obviously, since God Almighty Himself controls everything, including the moon and the stars, we know that Israel will never depart from Him.

Yom Kippur: A Day Like Purim

Another mystery of the Day of Atonement is found in relation to the book of Esther.*

Ecclesiastes 1:9-10, "That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one might say, “See this, it is new”? Already it has existed for ages which were before us.

Purim is the biblical holy day that is celebrated on the 14th and 15th of the last month of the biblical calendar (Adar 14-15 on the Jewish/Babylonian calendar.) This holy day commemorates the victory of Mordecai, Esther (Hadassah), and the Jewish people over their genocidal enemy, Haman. Purim is one of the most joyous holy days of the year, and is celebrated by giving gifts to the poor, dressing in costumes, and having large feasts and parties.

But what does this have to do with the Day of Atonement? To understand this, we must explore the very words that make up these two holy days, and then we will see how they relate.

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonements, is actually better known as Yom Kippurim. “Kippur” (Hebrew ???) literally means “atonement.” The plural form of “Kippur” is “Kippurim” (?????), which literally means “atonements”. On the tenth day of the seventh month (Tishri 10), there are several sacrifices which atone for several things: the sacrifice of the bull and ram to atone for the sin’s of the high priest and his family, and then the sacrifice of the La Azazel (scapegoat) and La Adonai (Lord) sin offerings, which atone for the sin’s of the nation of Israel. The word “Yom” is the Hebrew word for “day.” Thus, “Yom Kippurim” is literally “Day of Atonements.”

Also, in Hebrew if one takes the first letter of “Kippurim”, which is “kaf” (?), and uses it as a conjunction, it becomes the conjunction, “like, as, or similar to.” Purim is spelled ?????. So one way to look at the phrase “Yom Kippurim” is Day of Atonements, but another valid way is to look at it as ,“Yom K’Purim”, or “Day like Purim!” (?–?????).

Now that we have uncovered some of the etymology of the title of these two holy days, we can explore them in depth to understand how they relate. First we will review the origin of Purim.

Remember, Esther went before King Ahasuerus and secured the freedom of the Jewish people, as well as the destruction of Haman, on the exact days of the spring feast days: Passover, Unleavened Bread, and Firstfruits. This prophetic foreshadow of Messiah’s first coming symbolized the defeat of death and sin, and the freedom won for the people of God.

We also learn that Haman the Agagite cast the lot (pur) to determine the destruction of the Jew’s from the first month (Nisan) until the last month (Adar).

Esther 3:7, "In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, Pur, that is the lot, was cast before Haman from day to day and from month to month, until the twelfth month, that is the month Adar."

This “pur” was cast throughout the year, starting in the first month, and it finally landed at the end of the year, on Adar 13. This was the day that God’s people were to be destroyed by the accuser/enemy, Haman. However, this did not occur, but rather due to the intervention of Esther, the King determined that the forces of Haman the enemy were to be destroyed on this very day (Adar 13).

To understand this correlation, one must understand that the Spring Feast Days (Passover, Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits, Shavuot) are when the Messiah accomplished His role as the Suffering Servant (Mashiach ben Yosef). The Fall Feast Days (Trumpets, Yom Kippurim, Tabernacles), however, foreshadow Messiah’s second coming as the Conquering King (Mashiach ben David) and the defeat of the anti-christ and his forces.

As we showed earlier, the dates of Passover, Unleavened bread, and Firstfruits were used in the book of Esther to prophetically foreshadow Messiah’s first coming at the beginning of the age of man. Similarly, Purim is used to prophetically foreshadow Messiah’s second coming at the end of the age of man to establish His kingdom (Millennial Reign).

Yom Kippurim, the “Day of Atonements,” is the day that prophetically foreshadows the second coming of Messiah as the King and Judge. It is a day of affliction, sorrow, and regret, but only for those that do not know the LORD and have not accepted the sacrifice of Messiah. In the celebration of Yom Kippurim, we see the severity of our affliction, the depths of our fallen state, and our own need for a Savior. We see the necessity of His sacrifice as THE fulfillment of the Yom Kippurim sacrifices. We also see the pure righteousness in which we can clothe ourselves by our acceptance of Messiah’s sacrifice on the cross. Without Messiah and His sacrifice, all of our works are filthy rags before God, and we are condemned without Him:

Isaiah 64:6, "For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; and all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away."

Yom K’Purim (Day like Purim), on the other hand, show’s us the great mercy and victory that will be brought by our LORD and Messiah! It is a day of joy, celebration, victory, and charity! Purim prophetically foreshadows the coming of the Messiah, but in victory to those who love and follow Him. Just before Messiah was crucified, He told His disciples:

John 16:22, "So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

In Purim/Yom K’Purim, we see Messiah come not to condemn those who have accepted Him, but rather to raise to eternal life His bride, His ekklessia, His saints, His lost sheep, to rule and reign with Him forever and ever! Happy Yom Kippur my friends! In the name of Jesus the Messiah, Be Shem Yeshua Hamashiach, Amen, Amen, Amen!

A time to kill and a time to heal; a time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace and a time to shun embracing. A time to search and a time to give up as lost; a time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; a time to be silent and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace."
