Fears Raised about Horse Tapeworm Treatments
Horse owners across Europe are being urged to act now to prevent potential resistance to tapeworm treatments, amid concerns about an emerging decline in their effectiveness.
The plea has been issued by Austin Davis Biologics (ADB) after recent research from the University of Kentucky in the USA has raised the alarm that “the first signs of another lurking anthelmintic resistance” may be emerging.
The concerns relate in particular to the effectiveness of praziquantel and pyrantel, which are the only active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) currently licensed for equine tapeworm control in the United Kingdom.
