Hello, and welcome to the?Mindset Code, a newsletter that helps you use your mind to change your life. In this edition, we will discover how a simple technique can help you overcome your fears and anxieties. This technique is called the 5-second countdown, and it is based on the idea that you have only five seconds to act on your goals before your mind stops you with doubts and excuses. By counting backward from five to one, you can break your bad habits and start your good ones.
Julia is a team lead at Appify, a company that specializes in making apps for various clients. She has been working there for three years and has always delivered high-quality products that meet the expectations of the customers. However, she feels bored and unchallenged by her routine work and wants to try something new and different.
One day, she gets a call from a very big customer who wants an app for e-commerce. The customer is the owner of a large online retail platform that sells everything from clothes to electronics to books. He says he wants to expand his business and reach more customers through a mobile app. However, he has zero idea what kind of app he wants or how it should look and function. He says he trusts Julia and her team to come up with the best solution for him.
Julia is excited by this opportunity and decides to take a risk and do something out of the box for this big customer. She thinks that the usual e-commerce apps are too boring and generic and that she can create something more innovative and engaging. She wants to make an app that uses artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and gamification to enhance the shopping experience of the users.
She gathers her team and shares her vision with them. She says that they have a chance to create something unique and groundbreaking that will revolutionize the e-commerce industry. She says that they have full creative freedom to design and develop the app as they wish, as long as it meets the basic requirements of the customer.
However, her team is not as enthusiastic as she is. They are worried about the risks and challenges involved in such a project. They say that they have never done anything like this before and that they don’t have enough time, resources, or expertise to pull it off. They say that they are more comfortable with following the established standards and practices of app development and that they don’t want to jeopardize their reputation or relationship with the customer.
Julia understands their concerns but also believes in their potential. She wants to inspire them to take a leap of faith with her. She decides to apply the 5-second rule to risk-taking, which is a technique that helps people overcome fear and hesitation by acting on their impulses within 5 seconds.
She explains the 5-second rule to her team and asks them to try it with her. She says that whenever they have an idea or a suggestion for the app, they should share it with the rest of the team within 5 seconds, without overthinking or doubting themselves. She says that this way, they can generate more ideas and feedback and explore more possibilities for the app.
She also says that whenever they face a problem or a challenge in the app development process, they should act on it within 5 seconds, without procrastinating or avoiding it. She says that this way, they can solve problems faster and more effectively and overcome any obstacles or setbacks.
She demonstrates the 5-second rule by giving an example of an idea for the app. She says that she wants to make an app that uses artificial intelligence to analyze the preferences and behavior of users and provide them with personalized recommendations and offers. She says that this will make the app more user-friendly and increase customer loyalty and retention.
She then counts down from 5 to 1 in her head and shares her idea with her team within 5 seconds. She asks them what they think of her idea and how they can implement it in the app.
Her team is surprised by her boldness and enthusiasm but also intrigued by her idea. They start to share their own ideas and suggestions for the app, using the 5-second rule as well. They come up with ideas such as using augmented reality to let users try on products virtually before buying them, using gamification to reward users with points and badges for completing tasks and challenges in the app and using social media integration to let users share their purchases and reviews with their friends.
They work together as a team, supporting each other and giving each other feedback. They use the 5-second rule to overcome any fear or doubt they have along the way. They also use it to communicate effectively with the customer, updating him regularly on their progress and getting his approval on their decisions.
They manage to finish the app within the deadline and present it to the customer. The customer is amazed by their work and loves their app. He says that it is exactly what he wanted and more. He praises Julia and her team for their creativity and innovation and says that they have exceeded his expectations. He says that he is looking forward to launching the app and seeing the results.
