Fearless Global Initiative supports inaugural Give to Women and Girls Day

Earlier this year, I was proud to join forces with other youth advocates to launch Fearless, a global initiative with a mission to raise awareness about the challenges facing girls today and to help advance opportunities to fund, fuel, and inspire them. As a former government official and global leader of Girl Scouts, I knew that we had to do more to elevate girl issues and to partner with other organizations that could help mobilize awareness and funding to support girls globally.

Today, the Fearless Global Initiative is proud to join forces with the Women & Girls Index as they launch the inaugural Give to Women and Girls Day, a groundbreaking effort to increase funding for women’s and girls’ organizations, in partnership with Giving Tuesday, the Ms. Foundation, Philanos, Philanthropy Together, Pivotal Ventures, Schusterman Family Philanthropies, United Nations Foundation, Vital Voices, Women's Funding Network, and Women Moving Millions.

Like these advocates, the Fearless Global Initiative envisions a world without gender discrimination, and where businesses and philanthropic donors contribute significantly to ensuring stability and happiness for girls.

Although women make up 51% of the U.S. population, the?Women & Girls Index?(WGI) has consistently shown that?less than 2%?of all charitable giving goes to the nearly 50,000 U.S. organizations dedicated to women and girls.?Give to Women and Girls Day?is an opportunity to increase giving and move beyond 2%!

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Today, girls and young women are disproportionately impacted by unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19, humanitarian conflicts and crises, and the growing numbers of climate-related disasters facing our planet.?

However, the philanthropic giving to girl causes and girl-serving organizations has not increased in 30 years and without increased philanthropic support for women and girls, we will not impact the gender pay gap, health disparities, and the educational attainment for all girls.

At this moment, nearly 130 million girls are out of school around the world.

WHAT IS THE WGI?

The WGI is the only comprehensive data on charitable organizations dedicated to women and girls in the U.S., the?Women & Girls Index?(WGI) tracks the amount of charitable giving these organizations receive from individuals, foundations, and corporations.

You can utilize the WGI to identify organizations dedicated to women and girls. Follow?this link?to access the database, where you can search for organizations by keyword, geographic location and category (e.g., civil rights and advocacy, education, women’s health, etc.). The WGI provides the website of most organizations, so you can make your Give to Women and Girls Day donation directly to the organization(s) that align with your values.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY?

Fearless will continue to raise awareness about girl advocacy issues and will partner with the Women and Girls Index and other girl-serving organizations who want to ensure a fair and equitable future for all girls.
