Fearless Female: Shannon Farley, Woman in Ag

Did a childhood experience spark your career passion? This is the case for Shannon Farley.

In celebration of Women’s History month, and to spread some positivity, I am sharing #FearlessFemale stories each week on LinkedIn. Read on to be introduced to a female who will inspire you!

Group of women at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women

NB: I first met Shannon when we signed up to lead our Women's Network EBRG. In the years that I've known her and worked with her, I have learned from her field experience, I have leaned on her tenacity as a mother, and I have deeply appreciated her support through many personal and professional experiences. I am proud to have Shannon in my corner, and I am delighted to share her wisdom with you today!

Q: What was your career journey?

A: I grew up watching my mom & dad work side by side, owning several gas stations in Florida. I have many memories taking naps on flats of soda cans, learning to count change out of vending machines, and learning that working hard is a lifestyle choice, not always a 9-5 gig. They were first to arrive in the morning, last to leave at night, and last to get paid. For me, work isn’t separate from home, it’s a part of everything we do.

Q: What big risk have you taken in your career?

A: I’m a big believer in “Just because it hasn’t been done before, doesn’t mean it can’t be done… sometimes you have to think outside the box.”   It’s a risk and a challenge having that mindset. Many times, explaining the destination is easy, but communicating the journey can be difficult. Considering new ways of doing things can be a challenge, but if you believe strongly that the path will lead to a more effective and successful way of doing business, you have to trust yourself and find a way.

Q: What’s a piece of advice you’d like to share?

A: Continue to be creative and bring something different to the table – I also encourage networking, learning and listening to others to hear a different perspective. Realize possibilities are only limited by you.

Realize possibilities are only limited by you.

Q: What’s your definition of a #fearlessfemale ?

A: A fearless female is one who isn’t afraid to fail. Because if you’re always thinking about failing, you won’t try new things. It’s okay not to know everything!

Q: Who is your favorite Fearless Female?

A: One of my colleagues, Kelly Goss. She took an entirely new role allowing her to learn a new part of the business, and I admire her tenacity. Lately, I’ve seen many females in my network  take on new roles, which is exciting, understanding that traditionally, women don’t apply for jobs unless they know how to do it. Expanding our network, fortifying our knowledge of the business, while bringing new ideas to the process will make MAH even better.
