Fearless and Curious: A Conversation with Balty Mabitsela

At Marakele National Park, where the rugged beauty of nature meets the unyielding commitment of conservationists, Balty Mabitsela, Assistant Interpretive Officer, sat down to reflect on his journey, passion, and the inspirations that keep him moving forward.

In a week filled with significant encounters, Balty shared, “I had a meaningful conversation with honorary rangers and gained valuable advice.” It was a moment that highlighted the importance of shared wisdom and collaboration in the conservation field.

When asked what animal most closely reflects his personality, Balty didn’t hesitate. “The honey badger,” he answered with a confident smile. “Mellivora capensis is known for its fearlessness. I believe I carry the same trait; I never shy away from challenges, no matter how difficult they may appear.”

Balty’s journey into conservation began with simple childhood curiosity. “I was that boy who followed ants to their pit. I always wanted to know how nature works. It started as a self-study to feed my curiosity, and I eventually built a career out of it.” That insatiable curiosity still drives him today.

But misconceptions, Balty admitted, persist. “Some people still think conservation is about keeping people away from nature. In reality, it’s about sustainability—teaching people how to live in harmony with the environment.” For Balty, this is not just a job; it’s a mission.

Reflecting on one of his most unforgettable moments, he recounted a thrilling—and terrifying—memory from his internship days. “A field ranger and I were charged by lions. It was a near-death experience, but the ranger’s bravery, ensuring my safety, inspired me deeply.”

Balty takes pride not only in his work but also in the kindness he brings to it. “Kindness is underrated,” he shared. “I always make sure to treat our guests with warmth. People often compliment how easy I am to interact with, and I’m proud of that.”

Energy and growth are themes that seem to shape Balty’s outlook. He thrives on new challenges, asking himself daily, “What’s next?” But monotony is a different story. “I’m still young, and there’s so much more I want to learn. That’s why I’m grateful for my current role—it offers me that opportunity.”

Balty credits Masindi Raselabe, his mentor fresh out of university, as a key figure in his career. “He helped me kick-start my path as a conservationist. Being mentored by someone so hardworking was a blessing.”

Outside of work, Balty finds solace and wonder in bird-watching. “I’m eager to learn about their behavior, habitats, and species. On weekends, I travel to spot new birds—it’s my passion.”

His bucket list reflects his adventurous spirit: “To have a complete bird-watching equipment collection, to visit all 24 national parks, and to start a travel blog.”

Currently reading 12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Peterson, Balty draws wisdom from its pages. “The best advice I’ve received is, ‘Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping.’ It’s a reminder to care for yourself with kindness and intention.”
