In a recent event, we started talking about fear, and I have since felt this is a topic I need to dive more into.
Fear is the #1 cause of failure.
When we take a close look, fear will cause people to pass up opportunities, bomb interviews, self-sabotage, stay in a marriage that’s not working, stay in the job they hate, and the list goes on. Fear keeps people stuck! How do I know? I’ve done those things! So I’ve learned…
Anytime you reach for something greater, anytime you try to step out of your comfort zone, fear will strike - whether it’s fear of failure, fear of making mistakes, concerns about other people’s opinions, and the list goes on. The internal chatter starts and it appears that the only way to make it stop is to play it safe.
But it becomes a trap, and we invariably find ourselves in the same spot year after year, which causes increased frustration and dissatisfaction.
What’s important to realize is growth and fear go hand in hand, so fear is actually a good sign! It’s a sign that you are stepping out of your comfort zone, and if you do – you are bound to experience different results in your life.
No matter what you choose – because it is a choice, whether it is a choice by default or a conscious choice – you can never escape risk. There is always something at stake, you are always putting something on the line. Playing it safe (i.e. resigning yourself to the status quo) is likely not your best odds, because nothing ever stays the same. The only constant in life is change. So you might as well take the risk to go for something you want – it might actually work out!!!
In order to overcome fear, I have found a few things to be helpful:
-?????? Make a definite decision you’ve had enough of the status quo – call it a day!
-?????? Have a clearly defined goal that you are passionate about: you need something to drive you, inspire you to make the risk worth it!
-?????? Ask yourself what are you really afraid of?
-?????? Do you have a valid reason for it?
-?????? What’s the worst that could happen?
-?????? What’s the best that could happen?
-?????? What could you do to give yourself the best odds?
-?????? Act as though it were impossible to fail. Make it your mantra!
?
And if you fail, guess what? You get back up and you try again. There is no such thing as failure unless you stop trying. I love how Edison phrased it “I just found 10,000 times that did not work.” Edison was not afraid to fail. When you observe successful people, they were not afraid to fail. You learn from your mistakes and you course-correct.
And understand this: when you face your fear, that fear will die. Not right away, but every time you step out and do the thing you fear, your confidence will grow and you will start seeing the world from a whole new place. YOU will become a new person. And THAT, is exciting.
If it’s not quite exciting yet, keep this in mind:
The greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
What are some risks that you are not taking?
Why?
What are you putting on the line by playing it safe?
This week, I invite you to do something you are scared to do, that you have been procrastinating about and comment below!
