Fear of Public Speaking is Costing You.

Psychology Today's article by Glenn Croston Ph.D. mentions the fear of public speaking ranking higher than death!

Another surprising statistic is that public speaking fear has a 10% impairment on wages, a 10% impairment on college graduation, and a 15% impairment on promotion to management according to a publication by Columbia University. If you add this up this can be costing you at least $10,000 per year. Over a 10-year career that's at least $100,000. What could you have done with that extra $100k? The crazy part is that only 8% of the population take steps to solve this problem despite the documented negative impact on your wallet and career.

You're going to work every day with a goal and dream. You have dreams of owning your own business or starting a startup or becoming the top salesperson. You want a promotion. You want to be financially free. No matter how talented you are and no matter how smart you are, if you can't present or sell yourself effectively, you can find yourself as one of the statistics mentioned here.

Public speaking is texting, sending an email, meeting for coffee, having a phone conversation, presenting to a team of 8 people or from a stage in front of thousands. Public speaking is posting a social media video. Public speaking is anytime you have an idea or thought or desire inside of your head or your heart that you want to share with another person. Even greater than simply sharing something with another person is when you're asking for something from them. You can be trying to raise capital, close a sale, get a date, or save the world. If you want someone to understand what's inside of you and you want them to take action, then that's public speaking.

Something that I see often are courses and tips and tricks and the 'top 5 things' you must do for this or that result. It's not that those things aren't true but what happens more often than not is that the person reading those tips will either never implement those tips or he or she won't implement those tips in an effective way. The problem with that is that it's heart-breaking and can make you lose hope. The crazy part is that it's more than likely that the problem is not what you have to offer or your own skills or talent or ability but rather the way you're presenting it.

J.K. Rowling is known for her creation and writing of "Harry Potter." Most people know that she was rejected many times before someone decided to take a chance on her and her 'story.' You can say that the people that said 'no' to her were foolish but consider the fact that nothing changed in regards to her product from the first time she pitched it to the time that it was accepted. What this means is that either she never gave up or her pitching improved. So many times people get discouraged and give up or they keep doing what they were doing without improving in any way. Both of these aren't going to work in order to get you to your goals. Don't give up and at the same time, look for ways to improve your presenting skills and your public speaking.

It's January 1st, 2019. Make this year the best year of your life to date. Do something different if you want different results. Go after your goals and don't move the goals, increase your efforts. If you take average action, you get average results. If you want extraordinary results, take extraordinary action.
