Fear and proroguing on the campaign trail with Ralph Steadman

Fear and proroguing on the campaign trail with Ralph Steadman

This week’s cover is destined to become a collector’s item. It’s been created especially for us by the savage surrealist and shaker of the establishment Ralph Steadman. Almost fifty years ago he began collaborating with Hunter S Thompson, illustrating the fear and loathing they saw on Nixon’s campaign trail in ’72. Today, with even more fear and loathing in the air, Steadman, with his Big Issue cover, expresses the mood of a nation. Or at least 48% of it.

Readers have a chance to win an extremely limited edition signed print of the artwork by posting a picture of the cover on social media.

You can also watch Steadman creating it here: https://youtu.be/qQxuS9XCwL8

Everything’s changing for Keane frontman and sometime Big Issue busker Tom Chaplin so he takes us somewhere only he knows, guiding us around his local market on the banks of the Thames.

In our Letter To My Younger Self, broadcaster Mark Radcliffe recalls facing cancer without the beautiful presence of his beloved spaniel Toto.

This week’s My Pitch vendor is Richard who tells us about giving talks to kids in school.

Plus: Is it possible to cut emissions while still eating meat? Our Changemaker Jen Ang is settling the score for migrants and Jessica, a vendor from a street paper in Dortmund tells us the best things about Germany’s football capital.

Corporate Subscriptions are a simple and effective way for corporate supporters and friends to support The Big Issue’s social mission of dismantling poverty by creating opportunity through self-help, social trading and business solutions.

Your subscription will also help us to create alternative models of employment and training, such as our Sheltered Employment Scheme where we bring vendors indoors to work on fulfilling the subscriptions. .

Subscribers also receive an annual Social Impact report detailing the impact that the subscription scheme and your contribution has made in the lives of those you help. Each annual corporate subscription starts at just £250 per year.
