If someone says, he/she does not have a fear that will be a theory, we all have our share of worries, some Good for us and some concern are harmful to us. Let me share a few of my fears, which were baseless, and it was hampering my happiness and my growth.
The goal behind this series of articles is to unleash your full potential by helping you overcome your fears.
I will cover a series of my fear and how I overcame them and then finally conclude with the entire fear cycle, what it does to us and how we can come out of the trap of baseless fear, you will have fun in learning and growing, so today let me share with you my first fear, that is fear of heights.
Fear of Heights
I am sure a lot of us have this fear, plus point of that is you are careful at elevations, the down-side of that is you can't enjoy life, let me narrate a story to explain how this fear stole the joy of my life.
Me & Geetika ( My wife ) were in Toronto, Canada, on the 14th of June, 2014. There is a beautiful sightseeing tower, known as CN Tower, which is the tallest structure of Canada in my knowledge. If you go on the top of this tower, especially in the evening time, you can see the beautiful city illuminated with light and this view in itself is worth a million dollars. The tower is designed in a way to give you the complete picture of the magnificent city. From the safety point of view, there is proper railing along with durable glass, which is adequately covered so that there is no danger at all. Moreover, in one-fourth of the section, they have intentionally removed the glass from the top part, which is above your shoulder heights to give an uninterrupted view of the city. Also, there is no danger at all which my logical mind agreed, and if you go in that section you can feel the cold breeze of fresh air coming on your face, and if you can feel that breeze you will feel like you are on heaven, "but heaven is only for those who can enjoy the height."
You won't believe what I did, "I was paranoid, my face was looking ugly with fear, I was feeling like the tower is falling and I am getting smashed like a watermelon falling from the height and die. My heart was beating with such a high intensity that it can explode any time, and my legs were freezing with fear." In contrary, "Geetika was enjoying the beauty, her long beautiful hair was floating in the sky along with her black scarf and by seeing her joy on that face you can fall in love with her again, and I couldn't justify my fear, and the happier she was, more irritated I was, how ugly is my situation."
By the way, if I forgot to mention, I am a coach to many people, and I tell them stories of overcoming fear, and that makes it more embarrassing. I have read many books on positive attitude, as you can do it, you are the one and whatnot, but somehow it was not working for me on that day, then I took a decision after 10 mins of standing still and holding the railings that today I need to kill the fear of height, once and forever.
I knew, only way to come out of fear is face the fear, I left the railing from my hand, blood was flowing rapidly in my veins, I took a deep breath and stood In Front of the open air space, for the first few mins I didn't have the courage to open my eyes and with my eyes closed I just felt the cold breeze on my face, then slowly I opened my eyes and saw the beauty of the city and the view gave such a joy that I can't express with words, then slowly slowly I started walking and walking and walking and felt like a winner and a champion.
Now two points to be noted here: was that fear baseless? Yes, Because logically, I knew that there is no danger at all but is it not how our fear paralyzes us and stop us from growing to our fullest potential.
I will talk about a few more fears of my life, which I overcame to start living a fulfilling life.
If you got connected with this fear of mine and you can relate, I would love to know your story.
In the next few articles, I will talk about my other 9 fears which I overcame to become an entrepreneur, stay tuned and share this to whomsoever you feel can help.
