Fear of the Lord
Today's devotional is from Your Life Matters: Daily Reflections from the Psalms
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise" - Psalm 111:10.
It's interesting that in the midst of psalms declaring God's praise there is a verse that sounds like it came from Proverbs: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction" (Proverbs 1:7). That's because praise and worship are based on the fear of the Lord. When you worship, you sing, clap, dance, shout, and lift your hands not because you feel like it or because it fits your theology.
You do those things because they please God and He commands them to be done. When you hear the phrase 'fear the Lord,' what do you think it means? When you worship, do you follow your own preferences or God's? Are you exuberant at social or sporting events, but measured and subdued in your response to the God of the universe?
