Fear is Learned—Here’s How to Unlearn It and Thrive as a Musician

Fear is Learned—Here’s How to Unlearn It and Thrive as a Musician

Fear is a natural part of life. It keeps us safe, helps us avoid danger, and even sharpens our instincts in challenging situations. But what if fear is actually holding you back from success? What if the fear of failure, change, or uncertainty is the very thing keeping you stuck in a cycle of exhaustion and limited income?

In this post, we’ll explore the science behind fear, why it’s often a learned behavior, and—most importantly—how you can unlearn it to create prosperity in your life and music career.

A Baseball Game, a Near Miss, and an Unexpected Lesson

A few nights ago, I watched my 10-year-old son play in his first baseball game of the season. He had been practicing hard for weeks, and his dedication paid off—he nearly hit a home run! We were celebrating his success, watching the video replay of his incredible hit, when he pointed out something we had completely missed in the excitement.

Before that big hit, something else had happened: he had almost been hit by the pitcher’s throw. He had to dodge the ball at the last second. Instead of panicking or letting fear take over, he stepped back up to the plate, focused, and swung with confidence.

The most fascinating part? When we talked about it later, he reflected on his emotions and realized something shocking: he hadn’t felt afraid. Even after nearly getting hit, he got back in the game without hesitation.

This moment made me reflect deeply on how we develop fear—and how we can overcome it.

Fear is Learned—And It Can Be Unlearned

The idea that fear is a learned behavior isn’t just a motivational concept—it’s backed by science.

A fascinating study once tested how babies react to snakes. Researchers placed babies in a controlled environment with non-venomous snakes. Instead of reacting with fear, the babies were completely unbothered, touching the snakes as if they were just another toy.

Why? Because fear isn’t innate—it’s learned.

We learn fear by observing others—our parents, teachers, society, and even our own past experiences. If we see someone panic about something, our brains start to associate that situation with danger, even if there’s no real threat.

But here’s the good news: If fear is learned, it can also be unlearned.

How Fear Holds You Back in Your Music Career

As musicians, fear often shows up in subtle ways that keep us stuck. Many of us fear change, clinging to traditional teaching or performance models simply because they feel familiar—even if they leave us exhausted. There’s also the fear of judgment, the worry that others will criticize us if we shift our business model or start monetizing our knowledge differently. Fear of failure holds many musicians back from taking risks, such as launching a new program or raising their prices, because of the overwhelming "what ifs." And then there’s the fear of stepping away from one-on-one work, the belief that unless we're physically present with students, we're not providing real value.

But just like my son stepping back up to the plate after nearly getting hit, you too can choose to move forward. Fear doesn’t have to control your decisions—it can be understood, managed, and ultimately, unlearned.

Don't Let Fear Hold You Back

How to Overcome Fear and Step Into Prosperity

Fear is just a feeling, not a fact. It often arises when you're on the verge of something powerful, acting as a signal for growth rather than a stop sign. Recognizing this shift in perspective can help you move past fear and embrace new opportunities.

One of the best ways to break fear’s grip is through movement. Stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol are meant for action, yet we often freeze instead. Simple activities like walking, stretching, or deep breathing can help reset your nervous system, clearing your mind for better decision-making.

Reframing your business model also reduces fear and stress. Many musicians feel trapped in the one-on-one teaching model, but shifting to scalable income—through group programs, digital courses, or asynchronous coaching—creates more financial stability and time freedom.

By building a business that supports your life rather than drains it, fear naturally fades. The key is to take action, trust the process, and remember—fear is learned, and you have the power to unlearn it.
