Fear of Ego Death...
One the fundamental flaws written into the character of this story of man is it appears that they fear the death of ego far more than they LOVE life. This has led them to millenniums upon millenniums of unconsciously attempting extinction. What despite their supposedly high evolved brains continually escapes them, is the fact that if there is no life, there is no ego. So indirectly by not putting LOVE of life before fearing death of ego they have sentenced their egos to death regardless...
