Fear Can Hold You Back… or Push You Forward

Life has a funny way of bringing things together at the right time.
As part of a challenge I’m participating in, I was asked a question I wasn’t expecting:
?? What would you do if you had no fears?
At first, my mind went to the usual fears—heights, certain risks, things I just don’t like.
But after sitting with it for a few minutes, I realized something bigger—fears are everywhere in our lives. Job security, health, relationships, taking the next big step.
Academia is full of them too—fear of not performing at the “expected” level, fear of losing funding, fear of stepping away from traditional paths, fear of starting something new.
But here’s the thing:
It’s not the fears themselves that matter—it’s what we do with them.
Pushing Past Fear: The One Thing I Finally Stopped Avoiding
Right now, I’m facing one of my own fears.
For the first time, I’m running my 14-Day Time Reboot Challenge, designed to help academics reclaim 2–3 hours per week for deep work—whether that’s finishing a paper, writing a book chapter, or finally making space for that side project. And let me tell you—running a challenge is a challenge in itself!
I’ve wanted to do this for a long time, but I kept putting it off. I worried: Would people sign up? Would it make a difference? Am I ready? But the truth is, we’re never 100% ready for the things that push us to grow.
So here I am, pushing past the fear and doing it anyway. And I know it will make a real impact for those who join.
Now, it's your turn. What Would You Do If Fear Wasn’t in the Way?
Maybe it’s putting your work out there.
Maybe it’s making a bold career move.
Maybe it’s saying NO to something that no longer serves you.
Maybe it's trying a new hobby.
Maybe it's running a marathon.
Maybe it's changing a habit.
Maybe it's creating a new habit!
Whatever it is—acknowledge it, but don’t let it stop you. Because growth only happens when we move forward, fear and all.
Your Next Step
Write down one fear that’s been holding you back. Then, ask yourself:
What’s the worst that could happen? and What’s the best that could happen?
Often, we realize that the worst-case scenario isn’t nearly as bad as we imagine—and the best-case scenario is life-changing. Then, take one small step toward it today.
By the way—there are still a few spots left for my challenge
Do you want to create new time management habits? The deadline to join my free 14-Day Time Reboot Challenge is today! If you want to regain control of your time and finally tackle the work that matters, this is your chance. It's totally free and only requires a few minutes of your daily time.
