FEA Analysis for Hybrid Anchored & MSE Wall - East Rail Maintenance Facility, Whitby, Ontario Canada

Arup provided geotechnical design services on behalf of Stantec, Bird, and Kiewit for Metrolinx's East Rail Maintenance Facility, located in Whitby, Ontario. One aspect of the construction involved creating a slip track from the elevated four-track mainline down to the lower yard level. The site was underlain by soft clay deposits. As the construction was adjacent to active rail lines, movements induced by the new construction were of utmost importance. The construction was comprised of a hybrid wall, anchored in the lower, deeper portion and a mechanically-stabilized "RISI" wall in the upper portion. Arup performed Finite Element Analyses (FEA) using 2D PLAXIS software package to confirm the viability of the contractor's proposed construction staging and methods.
