FDA Recall Round-Up: May Edition
May zipped by faster than free samples disappearing at Costco, and for some brands, it was a month they'd rather forget. Why? Because they landed in the soup with the FDA thanks to some labeling slip-ups.
Here's a look at May's top 5 product recalls, brought to you by your friendly neighborhood newsletter that's definitely not linked to a software that can help you avoid these labeling mishaps (wink wink, nudge nudge, it's called ComplyAI).
1. Reser’s Fine Foods and ALDI for all the wrong reasons
What should have been a salad dream team turned into a labeling nightmare thanks to mislabeling and an undeclared wheat allergen. This salad was even distributed across Alabama, Florida, New York, and several other states. Fortunately, Reser’s issued a voluntary recall and there haven’t been any reports of illness so far.
2. Sun Noodle's sunny side down situation
Okay, this pun might be a little yolky, but hear us out! Sun Noodle scrambled to recall over 37K cases of their S&S Cup Saimin because they did not mention an important ingredient: egg white powder. Luckily, the company hatched a recall plan quickly and averted potentially rotten consequences (we're done, we promise).
3. DaVinci Laboratories got a bit crabby
This brand recalled 72 bottles of their Amyloid Complete dietary supplement containing undeclared shrimp and crab. These crustaceans could have led to life-threatening consequences, but the company recalled the supplements immediately after a consumer complaint.
4. Texas Pecan’s party crashers
A routine inspection by the Texas Department of State Health Services revealed a party of allergens in Texas Pecan’s 1 lb and 8 oz products. According to the FDA, the undeclared allergens included “tree nuts, peanuts, almonds, brazils, cashews, filberts, macadamias, pistachios, pecans, pine nuts, walnuts, soy, dairy (milk), sesame and wheat.” Whew, what a mouthful. And not the good kind of Texas Pecan (we love their candy and nuts).

5. AMB Foods’ wheaty situation
This company issued a voluntary recall of its Pop a Nosh Mixed Munch Regular and Honey BBQ snacks for containing an undeclared ingredient — wheat. This oversight could have had serious consequences for consumers with wheat allergies, but the voluntary recall thankfully ensured that nobody fell sick.
So, there you have it, folks!?
May's FDA recalls served with a side of puns (and hopefully a newfound appreciation for clear labeling). Remember, when it comes to labeling, extreme caution is way better than the headache of recalls!
