Technology is constantly on the course of improvement—and it’s no different for life-aiding software implemented into evolving systems. Every day, we are seeing a smaller divide between developing tech and healthcare devices.
Apple’s AirPods are one such development in technology receiving quality-of-life upgrades that could positively impact older adults across the board. On the 12th of September, a select release of AirPods was approved by the FDA to function as an over-the-counter hearing aid by using its new sound amplification and adjustment system. By going to the Apple Health app and taking a short test that determines your needs, the AirPods will alter the sound around you based on your answers, making it easier to hear. The feature is compatible with AirPods Pro 2 and iPhones updated to iOS 18 or later.
This is incredible news, especially for those in search of ways to enhance their hearing without hassle. The accessibility of the program being incorporated into Apple products significantly broadens the reach of better hearing, most notably for people experiencing mild to moderate hearing impairment who may prefer a more familiar and less costly solution.
The AirPods hearing aid feature can make it much easier on budgets: according to Medical News Today, the price of hearing aids can range from $1,000 to $6,000. The AirPods Pro 2 are typically priced under $300 and come with the added benefit of Bluetooth services. If hearing aids can be made more accessible with the evolution of technology, what other improvements could be applied? Millions could gain access to life-changing support and healthcare in the near future.
