The FCC’s Proposed New Privacy Rules - Is An Opt-In Solution The Only Way?
The FCC recently proposed a set of rules for broadband providers that would significantly restrict how they use the data they collect on their customers’ behavior. Essentially, any additional use and sharing of that collected data would be prohibited unless the user opts in. Yet, many dominant advertising players can drop cookies and use data over the same ISP pipes and wires on a strictly opt-out basis. This appears to me to be a somewhat upside down double standard, demanding further conversation.
Check out my longer blog post here where I take a deep-dive on the issue and the nuances involved. I offer up some ways opt-outs can be better managed, to create a more transparent, and better web for the consumer.

From a contextual perspective it's fascinating to see the evolution of Facebook's privacy controls from 2012 https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2012/12/better-controls-for-managing-your-content/ through to what we have now. Consumers are now expecting (and understand) this opportunity to be available... even if it is not used by them so much. Looking forward to the continuation of this discussion.
