Storytelling (for you)

Look almost anywhere online and you will find some form of reference to storytelling. And how wonderful it is.

Which I agree with. It engages the other party, helps them remember the important things and if done well gets them actioning what you want.

But one overlooked part of storytelling is the stories we tell ourselves. You know, that inner voice that is a constant distraction forcing you to think about things that can ultimately be unhelpful.

About ten years ago I was introduced to a "storyline" concept from one of my exec coaches called See, Be, Do, Get.

What we see (or the story we tell ourselves), often determines how we Be (our behaviours), which impacts what we do (our actions) and the results we get from those (outcomes).

Scaling it back - the story your mind tells you and you tell yourself has a large impact on your outcomes.

Ask any elite high performing? athlete. Are they nervous or excited before the big event. The great ones say excited, they can't wait to get out there. The not so greats, nervous and fearful of the result.

Likewise this can play out for you as a finance professional. I see it all of the time with people who are nervous to engage non finance. Or before a big presentation.

It starts with the way you see things, and the story you tell yourself. And the best way to do it, start with the outcome you want and work backwards (See, Be, Do, Get in reverse)

The result you want to "get" is perhaps an approval of an idea you have

What would you need to "do" to get that. Perhaps a compelling argument and position which means you need to be well prepared and deliver it confidently.

How do you need to "be" to do that - you need to behave in a way that's positive and garners enthusiasm for it.

And to be that you need to tell yourself a story (see) that this is going to be a great presentation they are going to love. And you can not wait to deliver it. You got this.

Not a story of "what if they say no" or "this is making me nervous". That won't get you to "be" the way you need to be to "do" what you need to, to "get" the result you want.

It starts with the story you tell yourself.?

Try it out next time you are fearful of the Get (the outcome) and see if it makes a difference.?

Who theFBPteam does NOT help

A few weeks back?newsletter #38 was based around the things?theFBPteam does?and how we help the finance community propel their careers and the impact of their teams.

One thing I neglected to point out though is who we DO NOT help.

Which is often sometimes just as important, because there are a lot of finance people out there that we simply don't or can't help.

And those individuals and teams would best be served looking elsewhere for help (you can ask us though we know some great people who should be able to help).

So who do we?NOT help:

- Finance Professionals who are focused on data analytics, AI, spreadsheets, and modelling

- Finance Professionals focused on technical roles ie interpreting accounting transactions/standards and the treatment of them.

- Finance professionals who work predominantly in the finance department and rarely communicate outside of their function.

For those individuals we?DO?NOT help you. We don't teach you those things.?

Don't get me wrong these things are all very important in any organisation. But the business partnering skills we teach start where those things finish.

And the real kicker.....

If you are good at all of the above things but have poor business partnering and commercial?acumen?you rarely make it past middle management (or if you do it takes a long time).

But if you are great at business partnering and have strong commercial acumen but lack data analytics, spreadsheeting, modelling and technical skills you will still go far in your career.

And the beauty of these skills they are so easy to learn and apply. Which is great for ROI right?

High return, low investment of time and effort.

This is why we are so passionate about what we do at theFBPteam. We turn finance professionals into highly sought after commercial beasts who are able to work with anyone in their organisation.

And help finance create an impact.?
