Hello and welcome...?to my weekly newsletter, where I share a weekly tip on how to become a great FBP, plus?updates on?other free resources?we provide our clients to help lift the impact of finance professionals in their organisations.
FBP Tip #4:?The question everyone?asks...
Last week Chris Ortega, my new North American bestie, and I kicked off some free workshops on FBP. One of those was on Influence.
For most finance people when we want someone to do something for us, what do we do.
We just go and ask.....sometimes we just tell them to do it.....by tomorrow.....and what happens...
The other person resists you, feels threatened and if they do give you something, it's of poor quality.
This is where the WIIFM comes in. The one question everyone on the planet asks themselves when they are asked to do something they aren't sure of.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?
And if you can not answer that for them, your chances of influencing them decrease significantly.
So next time you go to ask someone to do something. And you think they may resist. Put yourself in their shoes and simply ask the question "What's in it for me"
If you can answer that for them you'll be one step closer to influencing them.
We are running our?free workshop on Influence?for Finance again this week so if you are interested just register below.
What advice should you listen to??
Wow,?there is a lot of crap out there on finance at the moment (you might include my stuff in that category, hopefully not).
A lot of it is on Linkedin unfortunately
And for finance people coming through their careers, reading and consuming it is a dangerous hobby.....if your ultimate goal is to become a senior finance executive
I got a little sick of reading some of this content over my holidays. And so I decided to write some tips on how to spot a fake.

Remember most people on LI are not experts. They are running side hustles, and have day jobs, or even worse just trying to be "influencers" (whatever that means for finance). And have never made it to the senior roles they are advising about.
Check out my article here?and if you are unsure, just reach out and I can let you know if what you are reading is going to be of use. Or even better, give you the deeper version of the surface level things you may be reading.
"Smart People know what to do...but they need to know what to stop" - Marshall Goldsmith
What got you here, won't get you there
At some stage in your finance career you will hit a career ceiling.?
That place where all of the things you have done previously, that made you successful, actually stop you getting further.
Things like being great at Excel, running more reports, building more dashboards, great technical knowledge, etc
All those things are great and must haves.
But they get you to where you are. Not to where you want to be.
A great?resource to help with this is a book by Marshall Goldsmith called
What got you here, won't get you there
If you are in a finance career of less than 12 years,?and you're not earning the big bucks, then read this book now.
It will fundamentally change the things you view as important, and get you focused on the things that will accelerate your career....mostly behavioural and the way you do things.....rather than the things that will tap you out.
