Fawlty Showers

Underestimate

That night I tuned into my daughter’s press conference. Blondie was working with local business leaders and politicians to repurpose buildings left empty as people continued working from home after the pandemic.

One politician, an arrogant little weasel named Paltry, had been a thorn in Blondie’s side, dismissing her ideas, calling her honey, and generally treating her as hired help.

Paltry had underestimated Blondie. He’d made an enemy without really knowing who or what he was dealing with.

Underestimating an enemy was never a good idea. It was how people relapsed, underestimating the pull of their addictions. It was how people returned to bad relationships, underestimating their attraction to someone toxic.

Trying a new drug was like making a new enemy – once you tangled with it or them, getting untangled wasn’t always easy.

Blondie stepped to the mic. Instead of discussing the progress of the project, she announced she had evidence Paltry was getting kickbacks from contractors.

Blondie didn’t actually drop the mic, but her smile had the same effect.

Today I won’t underestimate my enemy.

Fawlty Showers is a work of fiction. Any similarity between the characters and anyone you might know is purely coincidental.
