Are Fats Killing you & Making you Fat?

How often have you heard or read anything that told you fats or fatty foods are the cause of why you are fat? Different diets tell you to avoid eating certain foods that are considered as high-fat foods so that you can lose that stubborn fat and finally lose weight.

The truth is, there are two types of fats, healthy fats, and killer fats. Incorporating healthy fats into your diet will help you lose weight. It’s important to have healthy fats in our diet. Did you know that fats slow digestion? This, in turn, makes you less hungry and feel fuller longer. The main sources of healthy fat are olive oil, coconut oil, different kinds of nuts and nut butter, wild salmon, mackerel, or trout.

Killer fats, on the other hand, also called trans fats or saturated fats, are usually found in hydrogenated oils. Trans fat is made by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil, causing the oil to become solid at room temperature. Saturated fats raise your cholesterol level and will lead to an increase of multiple diseases that you can definitely avoid if you lay off on eating too much food that has hydrogenated oil.

The amount of healthy fats you should have in your diet depends on the individual. A rule of thumb is 20-30% daily calories from fat is a good setting point. There are a plethora of benefits on why we should have healthy fats in our diet. It helps in hormonal function, keeping inflammation low, keep hunger at bay, brain function, and optimizing performance in the gym, among other things.
