The link between my father and myself is stronger than glue because the best times in my life were the days I spent quietly with my father, learning strength in silence. My father never taught me the way to live, he lived, and let me watch him do it and I accepted that good father make good sons. One day he decided to peacefully leave for heaven. By the will of Almighty Allah, he left the 22 Hasan Homes on the 1st Friday of Ramadan, 18th of February 1994. He was laid to rest at the Defense Graveyard in Karachi.
Before leaving his family residence to his last destination, for almost one and a half year he was listening, the views on his life in the print media. The national and the international writers, columnists, critics and media collogues acknowledging his persona as “above the board” and manifesting him as the loyal soldier of the gun, columnist, journalist, writer, author with his pen and public speaker, broadcaster, a storyteller with his tong. In this period, he was bedridden, fighting lung cancer.
A day before his death he desired to listen to some negative remarks on his personality and life from anyone in many. Fortunately, out of the large number of articles written on him, there was not a single article, page, paragraph, sentence or word that could satisfy his last desire. He thanked Almighty Allah and closed his eyes, just five seconds before the end of the Ramadan fast. Here I got a lesson from his prolonged illness and agony that a great father is not a great man unless his child respects him. He was on the shoulders of his sons towards rest in peace.
I am thankful to him for his teaching, how to put my foot in front of the other foot, without his guidance and support. I admit that I could never have taken the next step in my life to reach my present status without his two names, “Ibnul Hasan”, associated with, “Yousuf” and a small boy become big men through the influence of big men who care about a small boy.
He was a known personality within and outside Pakistan, who preferred to be unknown. He was content but proud to be the “Major” of Pakistan Army, with his life achievement, decorated with “Sitara e Imtiaz” (Civil).
Major Ibnul Hasan was famous for his bilingual articles, columns and reports. He was an expert in his field, who had qualities at a personal level, which made him a great individual and these personal qualities are a must for any professional to reach a successful level, which he achieved during his professional life of 50 years, within and outside Pakistan.
Major Ibnul Hasan demonstrated his comprehensive knowledge of laws and ethics of journalism, creative capabilities and the intellect which were tied with hard work, honesty and integrity. He had an amazing sense of humour, with a supremely gifted style of writing and reporting. He had an astonishingly farsighted vision on the matters of international economics, political and social affairs and forecasted, analyzed, and commented on the future possibilities that need measures to cope with the actions, provisions and tips against any setbacks or occurrences in the best interest of Pakistan.
My mother was standing at the door to see him off to his last journey. She was a lady of strong nerves with an agreeable facial expression to his depart. She was seen to me as a witness to my father’s respect for a woman which is one of the greatest gifts a father can give to a son. No one can introduce my father’s personality as better as he did himself.
