The sun was just beginning to rise over the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico as my dad and I stood on the deck of a charter boat, ready to embark on a deep-sea fishing adventure at the 2023 Destin Fishing Rodeo. This was no ordinary fishing trip; it was a journey that would allow us to relive cherished memories from the past, enjoy the present and create new ones that would be talked about for years to come.

The Destin Fishing Rodeo, held annually in Destin, Florida, is a celebrated event that attracts fishing enthusiasts from all over the world. It's not just a fishing tournament; it's a tradition deeply ingrained in the culture of this coastal town. The rodeo boasts a rich history dating back to 1948, making it one of the oldest and most prestigious saltwater fishing tournaments in the United States. Every October, anglers gather to compete for prizes, but for my dad and me, it held a different allure.
?My dad, a lifelong fisherman, introduced me to the joys of fishing when I was five. I can still vividly recall those early mornings when we would wake up before dawn, pack our gear, drive by the local McDonald’s on Scenic 98, and head to the docks.? Multiple boats have been our vessel: Her Majesty, The Emmanuel, Sweet Jody, Big John, The Florida Girl, the New Florida Girl, Swoop, King of Kings, Swoop II, etc. Such Captains as Ben Marler (uncle Ben), Jim Westbrook, Cliff Cox, Todd Allen, Jim Green, and Jayson Self guided our journeys. Those fishing trips were more than just a hobby; they were opportunities for bonding, sharing stories, and forging an unbreakable father-son connection.
Childhood was tough. We weren’t always on the same terms all the time and work, school, and assignments put a divide between us that, each year, was erased in May, June or October for that time we were on boats together in the middle of the ocean with nowhere to go but the company of each other and the other passengers and crew on the ship.? As the years passed, life's demands took us in different directions, and our fishing adventures became less frequent. However, the memories of those moments remained etched in our hearts. The 2023 Destin Fishing Rodeo provided us with the perfect opportunity to rekindle those cherished memories and create new ones.
With the scent of saltwater in the air and the gentle rocking of the boat beneath our feet, my dad and I were filled with excitement as we set sail on our deep-sea fishing adventure. The anticipation was palpable as we joined fellow anglers on board, all eager to cast their lines into the bountiful waters of the Gulf.
This time, we are aboard the Sweet Jody. Our captain, Cliff Cox, and crew guided us to the best fishing spots, sharing their knowledge of the local waters and the various fish species that called it home. As we navigated further from the shore, I couldn't help but notice the twinkle in my dad's eyes – it was a look of pure joy and anticipation, a look that transported me back to those childhood fishing trips. He is a sucker for trolling who loves to fight the “Big One” and because of the resilience he was crowned the Warsaw Grouper champion in 2022. It’s time to go after another title!
The Gulf of Mexico proved to be generous that day. As we dropped our lines into the depths below, it didn't take long for the first catch of the day. The reel whirred, and my heart raced as I felt the tug on the line. A double hook! Two four-to-five-pound bull mingos!
My dad, with his decades of fishing experience, effortlessly reeled in a massive black snapper, weighing 8 pounds! As we high-fived and celebrated our catches, I couldn't help but think of all the times he had taught me the ropes, patiently showing me how to bait a hook, cast a line, and land the big one. Our roles had reversed, and it was a testament to the enduring bond between a father and his child.
Between the bites and the laughter, we found moments of quiet reflection. The rhythm of the sea had a calming effect, and it provided the perfect backdrop for us to reminisce about the past. We recalled the early mornings by the lake, the thrill of catching our first fish, and the lessons my dad had imparted – not just about fishing but about life itself.
My dad shared stories of his own father, my grandfather, who had instilled in him the love of fishing. We lost Frankie in 2006, and his memory is felt daily both each of us. Even a family cherished phrase and inside joke “The Dolphins!!!!” was shared, thinking of my German grandmother’s experience on the water as kids in the early 1990s. It was a lineage of anglers, and I felt honored to be a part of it. We talked about the challenges and triumphs we had faced as a family and the importance of spending quality time together. It was a poignant reminder that these fishing trips were about more than just catching fish; they were about strengthening our family bonds.
As the day wore on, we continued to haul in a diverse array of fish, from white snapper to trigger fish, and a couple big-sized red snappers we had to throw back as they were out of season. Each catch was a new memory etched into our shared history. We marveled at the beauty of the underwater world and the sense of awe that comes with connecting with nature in such a profound way.
The conversations flowed freely, and we discussed our hopes and dreams for the future. We talked about his life in retirement, redoing my parents’ new home and the upcoming hunting session. And then shifted to my two kids and their growth and journey in the toddler world.? My dad shared his desire to teach his future grandchildren the art of fishing, just as his father had taught him. It was a vision of passing down traditions and values from one generation to the next, and it filled me with a sense of purpose and responsibility.
As the sun began its descent toward the horizon, casting a golden glow over the Gulf, we found ourselves in a state of pure contentment, riding back into the harbor to see the day’s catch and other competitors’ bounty. The day had been filled with laughter, reminiscences, and the joy of rekindling our shared passion for fishing. We knew that this deep-sea fishing adventure was more than just a one-time experience; it was a reaffirmation of our bond as father and son.
As we made our way back to the shore, the boat loaded with the day's catch, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude. The 2023 Destin Fishing Rodeo had allowed my dad and me to relive cherished memories from the past and create new ones that would be talked about for years to come.
Our deep-sea fishing adventure was more than just a day of catching fish; it was a day of bonding, reflection, and reconnection. It was a reminder of the enduring power of family traditions and the importance of spending quality time with loved ones.
In the years to come, I have no doubt that we will continue to share stories of our fishing experiences, passing them down to future generations. And as my dad dreams of teaching his grandchildren the art of fishing, I know that the legacy of our father-son adventures will live on, just as the memories of those early mornings by the water have lived on in me.
The 2023 Destin Fishing Rodeo was not just a fishing trip; it was a journey of the heart, a celebration of family, and a testament to many years past and hopefully the opportunity to pass it down to the fourth generation of my lifetime with my son, Micah, and daughter, Addi.
