A Fateful Trip: Reflections on Life, Luck, and Choices

A Fateful Trip: Reflections on Life, Luck, and Choices

In my first newsletter, I shared the story of my memorable trip to St. Croix, a getaway that followed my first big payday. Our destination was the Fountain Valley Golf Club, a magnificent resort on St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. It was owned by one of the Rockefellers. We spent our days playing golf under the Caribbean sun. We enjoyed dinner and (too many) drinks on a beautiful veranda overlooking the course and the lush countryside.

It was a fantastic trip. We had a great time.

However, just weeks later, my fond memories of the trip were abruptly shattered when I came across a distressing headline in the papers. Five native Virgin Islanders armed with long guns had attacked the very resort where we had stayed (it became known as the “Fountain Valley Massacre”). The horrific incident claimed the lives of eight people, including four resort guests and four workers, while another eight were injured.

I was shaken for weeks after realizing that my buddies and I could have been victims if the attack had happened during our stay. The mere thought of those innocent lives lost, and that 0I could have been in their shoes, weighed heavily on my mind.

With time, the constant replay of the incident in my thoughts faded. But even today, especially on every September 6th, I can't help but reflect on that fateful day. It serves as a stark reminder of life's fragility and the unpredictable turns it can take.

After my next real estate deal went sideways, I focused on investing in small companies with growth potential. It proved to be a path where I excelled, ultimately enabling me to retire in my fifties.

Today, I am guiding financial advisors on their journey towards simple, rapid, and? significant increases in revenue and growth far beyond their norm. The massacre in St. Croix changed my view of life and success. It taught me to appreciate each day and seize opportunities.
