Is it Fate or Choice that Guides Us?

The age-old debate about whether our lives are governed by fate or shaped by our choices has fascinated humanity for centuries. Philosophers, theologians, and scientists alike have grappled with the question: are we merely players in a grand cosmic script, or are we the architects of our destinies? The answer, perhaps, lies in understanding the dynamic interplay between the two. However, my opinion is that we have free choice in most things we do.?

Understanding Fate

Fate is often seen as the idea that our lives follow a predetermined path, governed by forces beyond our control. This concept is rooted in ancient philosophies and religions:

  • Greek Mythology spoke of the Moirai, or Fates, three sisters who wove the threads of human destiny.
  • Stoic philosophers like Marcus Aurelius emphasized accepting what happens as part of a divine plan.

For many, fate provides a sense of order and meaning in a chaotic world. It offers comfort in the belief that events unfold as they are meant to, even when they seem incomprehensible.

The Power of Choice

In contrast, the idea of choice emphasizes human agency. Existentialists, such as Jean-Paul Sartre, argue that life’s meaning is not predetermined but created through our actions and decisions. This perspective celebrates:

  • Freedom: The ability to make choices, regardless of external circumstances.
  • Responsibility: Owning the outcomes of those choices, whether they lead to success or failure.
  • Adaptability: The capacity to change course when faced with unexpected challenges.
  • In Hinduism, the concept of karma suggests that past actions influence our current and future circumstances.

Proponents of choice see life as a blank canvas, with each decision adding a unique stroke to the masterpiece of our existence.

Fate and Choice: My Perspective

Rather than viewing fate and choice as opposing forces, many thinkers suggest they coexist in a complementary relationship. I believe that we are given thoughts by our Higher Power that may or may not lead us to take actions and move forward. I also think that doing nothing is a choice. One might argue that the idea popped into a person’s mind and that was free-will. ON the other hand, what initiated the inspiration? For me, that’s where my Higher Power plays a undeniably significant role.?

  1. Fate as the Framework: Fate might set the stage by determining the circumstances of our birth, such as our family, culture, and innate abilities. These factors influence, but do not dictate, our trajectory.
  2. Choice as the Catalyst: Within the framework provided by fate, our choices shape how we respond to life’s opportunities and challenges. Two people born into similar circumstances can lead vastly different lives based on their decisions.
  3. Serendipity and Opportunity: Sometimes, events outside our control (fate) create unexpected opportunities. Our readiness to recognize and act upon them (choice) determines their impact on our lives.

Real-Life Examples

Consider the story of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist for girls’ education. Fate placed her in a region where education for girls was suppressed, but her choice to speak out against injustice made her a global icon for change. Similarly, Steve Jobs faced numerous setbacks, but his choices to persist and innovate redefined technology and culture.

These examples highlight how fate may influence circumstances, but choice determines how we navigate them.

Finding My Paths

To navigate the interplay of fate and choice, I live by the following strategies:

  1. Acknowledge What I Can’t Control: I accept that certain aspects of life are beyond my influence. This acceptance fosters resilience and helps me focus on areas where I can make a difference. I have touched the lives of thousands of students as an educator for 41 years. Presently, I am serving a global community of adults ready for change, but not sure of where to start.?
  2. Embrace My Agency: I recognize the power of my choices. Every decision, no matter how small, contributes to shaping my life.
  3. Stay Open to Possibilities: I am attuned to the unexpected opportunities that my Higher Power may present. Sometimes, life’s detours lead to the most rewarding destinations. I look at my thriving business as an example. It was catapulted into being when Covid-19 hit and I found myself without a job for the first time in 50 years. Something ignited a fire in me to go find something that suited me, where I could serve others and help myself.
  4. Reflect and Adapt: I regularly assess my choices and their outcomes. I? learn from my mistakes and adjust my paths as needed. I journey many paths simultaneously and each has led me to success, always with a few challenges along the way.?

Conclusion

I don’t spend much time contemplating how an idea popped into my head. I recognize that some things are gifts given to me from above. It is my job to choose what to do: let the thought evaporate or jump on it without wavering in my decision. This process has enabled me to? find meaning and purpose, navigating life’s twists and turns with both acceptance and intention.
