FAT IS NOT A FEELING

I recently spoke about over-concern with weight and body shape.

Another element of this is ‘feeling’ fat.

Most of us have experienced this at some point but for some, it is more frequent and intense than others.

It can seem all-consuming, even overwhelming, and can thus spark some very unhealthy behaviours as we try to control our emotions through food.

We think yet another diet is the solution when in fact, this usually makes it worse as we slip into a binge/restrict cycle.

If this sounds familiar then it needs to be addressed.

The first step is to realise that fat is NOT actually a feeling, it is actually a natural part of our bodies.

What people really mean is that they are unhappy with their body-this is why even the slimmest people can ‘feel’ fat.

But the feeling they are experiencing is usually the result of other emotions such as boredom, anxiousness, loneliness, stress etc which we tend to mislabel.

It is rarely because you have suddenly gained any fat.

Even if the scales have gone up overnight, this is most likely water ... fat gain doesn’t occur as fast as you may have been led to believe.

It is therefore important to find out what triggers this ‘fat’ feeling, to learn more about why you are experiencing it and what other emotions are present.

You can do this by identifying when you feel it most intensely and recognising patterns.

I think everybody has days like these - also - they probably have 'thin' days as well. Always best to work it through with an expert though :0)
