How much does your reaction time mean to your customers?”
What’s the value of speed in your business?
I got to attend BizX in Las Vegas last week. One of the keynote speakers, Jay Baer, shared some eye-opening statistics about the importance of speed.
Why is speed so critical? It comes down to how it makes the buyer feel. We interpret speed as caring, and responsiveness as respect. The data shows that a slow response time will cost your business in real dollars and opportunities lost.
But the equation isn’t as simple as speed = profit.
Response vs Resolution
Jay cautioned, “No one wants to go to the fastest tattoo artist in Las Vegas.” When a business is too fast, it raises some questions about the lengths they may have gone to, or the shortcuts taken, to deliver so quickly. And if the final product is poor quality, no one wants to come back. ?
There’s an important distinction between speed of response and speed of resolution. Often, a quick response time to signal that you’re on top of a question or inquiry is sufficient – even if you can’t give a definitive answer or jump into delivering the service right away.
The Goldilocks Zone
The key to getting this right is finding the “Goldilocks Zone” - not too fast, not too slow, but just right. Set clear expectations as soon as you can, then aim to beat them by a little bit.
This Week’s Takeaway
One of the most interesting stats Jay Baer shared was this: 1 in 4 customers will pay as much as 50% more to not wait.
Nothing is more valuable than time, so why not offer a chance to jump the queue? That’s why theme parks like Disneyworld and Canada’s Wonderland offer a Fast Pass; because they know some percentage of their customers will pay a premium to save time.
What would a Fast Pass look like for your industry, and how many buyers would take advantage of it?
