Dr. Alex Foxman Shares the Impact of Kardia 12L in His Practice
Dr. Alex Foxman is a seasoned healthcare provider with extensive experience in both mobile and preventive care. As the founder of Mobile Physician Associates and the Beverly Hills Institute, Dr. Foxman has focused on improving patient outcomes through innovative solutions. In this interview, he discusses how the Kardia 12L ECG System has enhanced care delivery across his practices, from faster ECG capture and streamlined workflows to AI-enabled interpretations and reduced costs, all of which have helped elevate the efficiency and quality of care for his patients.
Tell us about your practice and what led you to adopt Kardia 12L.
I’m double board-certified in internal medicine and obesity medicine, and have been in practice since 2003. I run Mobile Physician Associates, a mobile medical practice in Southern California, where we focus on elderly and disabled patients, helping them stay out of hospitals and emergency rooms. We also engage in value-based and risk-based programs to improve care quality, patient satisfaction, and reduce costs. One key tool we use is a mobile ECG device, which needs to be portable enough for home visits.
In addition, I have the Beverly Hills Institute, a preventive internal medicine practice offering primary care services along with lab work, X-rays, ultrasounds, echocardiograms, vaccinations, and more—all under one roof. Both practices would benefit from Kardia 12L.
Do you use or recommend Kardia personal ECGs to your patients??
Yes, we certainly do and I have my own KardiaMobile Card. We see patients with various symptoms or arrhythmias, and while there are many ECG devices available, I believe AliveCor’s KardiaMobile is one of the most innovative and easy-to-use devices that allows patients to easily capture a good rhythm strip and send it to us.
How has the introduction of Kardia 12L impacted your care delivery?
Initially, for my mobile practice, we used a bulky, battery-operated 12-lead ECG system. Our team, mainly licensed vocational nurses, would go to patients' homes, set up the system, perform a paper-based ECG, and then scan it for review at the end of the day. This was inefficient, as we didn’t have real-time tracings.?We later tried another mobile ECG system, but it was flimsy, difficult to set up, and often broke down. Plus, it required patients to be nearly undressed, which was a challenge for immobile patients.
When we found Kardia 12L, it was a game-changer. Its design is portable, simple, and quick—within 30-60 seconds, we get a full 12-lead ECG powered by AI with an instant interpretation. The previous system lacked real-time interpretation, and results would sometimes take hours. With Kardia 12L, we immediately receive critical insights, such as atrial fibrillation or heart attacks, that can be managed in real-time.

Kardia 12L is also easy to use and doesn't require patients to undress completely, making it more convenient. Its compact size and efficient workflow have reduced our ECG turnaround time from 10 minutes to just 3-5 minutes, including electrode placement. This has been a huge advantage for our mobile practice.
What was the experience in integrating this system into your practice?
Unlike traditional 12-lead ECG devices with paper readings, Kardia 12L is paperless which leads to cost savings. Medical practices and physicians can easily adopt since the app can be run on phone or tablet.?
In our mobile practice, the setup was relatively simple since we already had a similar process in place. Our clinic staff visits the patient’s home, performs an ECG using Kardia 12L and uploads it automatically to the portal. Our staff receives a notification, moves the document into our EHR, and flags it for review. If the results are urgent, such as a myocardial infarction (MI) or atrial fibrillation (AFib), they’re flagged as urgent, and the provider is alerted via text or call.?
Would you like to share anything with other providers considering this system??
For providers considering this system, there are several key benefits. First, the convenience. Kardia 12L placement is faster, leading to quicker ECG captures. There’s also a significant reduction in consumables. Traditional ECG paper is expensive and mostly wasted, as it's rarely kept or used properly. With Kardia 12L, there's no need for paper, which not only reduces waste but also lowers costs. Additionally, Kardia 12L uses just five electrodes instead of 10, cutting electrode costs. Being mindful of consumables is important, and this system helps with that. Lastly, the AI-powered ECG interpretation is a major benefit—it's reliable and adds great value to the system.
