?? UH to build a new dorm in an effort to shed commuter school image
A new residence hall for students was approved by the University of Houston's Board of Regents on Thursday authorizing it to spend $179 million on the project.
The new hall, which will be located on the west campus, across from TDECU Stadium, is part of a bigger goal to reach "primarily residential" campus classification by the Carnegie Foundation.
For some students, living on campus just doesn't make sense when compared to their budgets, and many discover that commuting, even from the suburbs of Greater Houston, is more cost-effective than living on campus.
?? Fort Bend residents fighting back against new concrete plant
Members of a residential Fort Bend neighborhood are mobilizing to block a concrete and rock-crushing facility from opening near their community.
Julpit Inc. is seeking a permit from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to begin construction at 8611 FM 521 Road, near Southern Colony and Sienna Point neighborhoods. The agency?will hold public comment on the proposal in Fort Bend County on Tuesday night.?
Air Alliance Houston, an advocacy group that's against the new plant, told Chron that rock and concrete crushing facilities emit particulate matter, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. These compounds are dangerous to the health of humans. Due to the small size of the particles, it allows them easy access to infiltrate the human body, increasing the risk of asthma, bronchitis, heart attacks, and strokes.
