Fast furniture is defined as furniture that is made quickly and cheaply, often with low-quality materials and is designed to be used for a short period before being discarded. This type of furniture is typically made from unsustainable materials such as plastic, particle board, and other synthetic materials, which are not biodegradable and can take hundreds of years to break down in landfills. The production of these materials requires a lot of energy and can contribute to pollution and climate change. Furthermore, because the furniture is made quickly, it is often not built to last and can easily break down, leading to more waste.
Fast furniture also hurts the workers who make them. These workers often work in dangerous and low-paid conditions, and they are rarely given any health or safety protections. This type of labour exploitation is a major problem and can lead to serious health problems for the workers involved. Overall, fast furniture is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. We need to shift away from this type of production, and instead focus on creating furniture that is ethically and sustainably made. This means investing in quality materials, materials that are renewable or recyclable, and focusing on creating pieces that are designed to last for years.
Environmental Costs of Fast Furniture
With furniture, the environmental costs are even greater because most pieces are made from wood, a material that takes much longer to regenerate than cotton or other materials used in clothing. Fast furniture is often made from a combination of low-cost materials like particle board, plastic, and metal, and its low price tag comes with a high environmental cost. Not only are the resources used to make it often unsustainable, but the furniture is often not built to last and will end up in landfills sooner than furniture made from more durable materials. In addition, much of the furniture is manufactured in countries with weaker regulations concerning labour and the environment, leaving a large carbon footprint from transportation and manufacturing.
To combat this issue, it is important to become more mindful about the furniture we buy, making an effort to purchase pieces that will last and come from manufacturers who use sustainable practices. Buying used furniture is another great option, as it is both more sustainable and often more affordable than buying new. Supporting furniture makers and designers who use sustainable practices is also essential. Finally, investing in quality furniture that will last for many years can help minimize our impact on the planet and ensure that we can enjoy our furniture for a long time.

The contrast between fast furniture and regular furniture
Normal furniture typically takes a long time to manufacture and assemble, as more detailed craftsmanship is involved. This type of furniture is usually made of natural materials such as wood, metal, and stone, and may be more expensive. Normal furniture is also more durable and may last for many years.
Fast furniture is usually made from materials such as plastic, particleboard, and plywood, which are mass-produced in factories. This type of furniture is often cheaper and quicker to assemble, but may not be as durable or as attractive as normal furniture. Fast furniture is also often designed for a specific purpose, such as a foldable desk or a stackable chair, and may not be suitable for long-term use.
How can we lower our reliance on fast furniture?

2 年Thanks for bringing this issue through your post. Today almost all readymade furnitures fall in this category. Now, when one say furnitures made of wood are bad for the environment, they should remember such furnitures pass from generation to generation. However, not a live tree should be cut down for making furnitures. Trend of renovating house more frequently is going against the environment too.
