Fashion Week 2024 takeaways

As 2024’s Fall/Winter Fashion Week is soon coming to a close, we reflect on the innovative creations that will help shape or solidify trends across industries. We have selected a few of the most iconic moments from this season relating to beauty, sustainability and culture.?

BEAUTY TRENDS

The Haute Couture Spring Summer 2024 fashion shows took over Paris from January 22nd to 26th, where Maison Margiela's runway show captivated audiences everywhere, especially thanks to the makeup looks created by iconic makeup artist Pat Mcgrath. Her “porcelain doll skin” went viral, captivating beauty content creators who were eager to replicate its flawless and unique aesthetic. Initially, McGrath kept the makeup technique under wraps, heightening anticipation. However, she unveiled the technique to the world on February 2nd, sparking a flurry of videos showcasing attempts to recreate her distinctive style across various media platforms.

Pat Mcgrath also recently announced the launch of a new limited edition lipstick in collaboration with Marc Jacobs, the MatteTrance Lipstick, to celebrate the fashion house’s 40th anniversary.?

The clean girl era has officially come to an end, with grunge-inspired makeup taking center stage on the runway this year. During its 2024 Fall Winter ready-to-wear fashion show in New-York, Marc Jacobs embraced 90s inspired grunge makeup, followed by Tom Ford. Models flaunted dark, smoky eyes, perfectly complementing the collection's blend of military-inspired elegance and edginess.??

In line with the "Make it big" trend forecasted on Pinterest annual predictions report, Marc Jacobs also unveiled its 2024 fall collection featuring voluminous lashes and oversized hair. It appears that this year, the mantra is indeed “the bigger, the better”.?

During New York Fashion Week, Kim Shui unveiled her 2024 Fall Winter collection, drawing inspiration from the Dragon New Year by incorporating auspicious colors such as red and green into her collection and crafting furry oversized trapper hats that evoke the spirit of dragon costumes worn during the festivities. She said “I wanted the women to embody that mother dragon energy”. Models wore sunglasses, so makeup looks focused on the lips, which were doned with dark red lip liner (another nod to the lucky color) captivating everyone’s attention with its glossy finish.?

TECH BREAK

For The Row’s Paris Fall Winter Fashion Show 2024, attendees were forbidden to take pictures or post anything on social media related to the show. The “no social media” policy generated a lot of suspense and controversy: while this artfully created a huge amount of buzz & was a clear nod to tech & social media fatigue, others criticized the move, which disappointed many in the social media and fashion sphere.?

SUSTAINABILITY

Copenhagen Fashion Week is renowned for its dedication to sustainability. This year, the Danish ready-to-wear fashion brand Ganni revealed its collaboration with the New Talent Program of Copenhagen Fashion Week. This initiative supports emerging Nordic brands that have been in business for less than 5 years, showcasing their commitment to positive change and sustainability. The collaborative exhibition “Future, Talent, Fabrics” took place January 31st - February 2nd in Copenhagen, supporting seven emerging Scandinavian designers and artists such as Alectra Rothchild, Jens Ole Arnason, Nicklas Skovgaard, and A. Roege Hove.? They were encouraged to use more innovative and sustainable materials like Circulose, a material made by recovering discarded cotton textiles into a dissolving pulp, or Celium, Polybion’s bacteria-grown vegan leather, to create their unconventional designs.?
