Welcome to the Fashion Pathfinder, a weekly Newsletter that will feature personal and professional insight, articles, interviews, and resources for Fashion Founders, Professionals, and Enthusiasts.
Every year, there are key paths that define how the Global Fashion Industry works and grows, in this article, I will share five (5) key paths that will shape the Business of Fashion in 2023.
These pathfinders are recommended insights that should direct how you operate this year;
important for businesses. By fostering a sense of belonging and engagement among customers, employees, and other stakeholders, businesses can build loyalty, trust, and advocacy. Community building can also help businesses to gather valuable feedback and insights and to co-create new products and services. Additionally, having a strong community can help businesses to weather challenges and changes, such as economic downturns or disruptions to traditional business models. Overall, investing in community building can have significant long-term benefits for businesses in 2023 and beyond.
Key Questions to ask this year; How is this fostering collaboration? Is it contributing to or impacting an existing community, are you building a community??
2. Volatile Economy; It is difficult to predict the specific state of the economy in 2023 with certainty, as it is dependent on various factors such as global politics, natural disasters, and pandemics. However, it is likely that the economy will continue to be volatile and uncertain. This volatility can be caused by factors such as trade tensions, rising interest rates, and shifting consumer behavior. Businesses operating in a volatile economy will need to be agile and adaptable in order to survive and thrive.
Tips to thrive in the VE; You will need to diversify your revenue streams, focus on cost-cutting measures, and build strong relationships with suppliers and partners. You will need to invest in digital technologies and automation to improve efficiency and increase your competitiveness.
Additionally, having a strong community, as mentioned earlier, can help businesses to weather challenges and changes.
3. Talent Development: In 2023, talent development will continue to be critical as we navigate a rapidly changing and competitive industry. The need for skilled and adaptable talents will likely only increase as new technologies and business models disrupt traditional industries and create new opportunities.
One key trend in talent development in 2023 is the growing emphasis on upskilling and reskilling. As the nature of work changes, people will need to continuously develop new skills and knowledge to stay relevant and valuable. Businesses will need to invest in programs and resources that support employee learning and development.

Another trend is the use of technology in talent development. Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Virtual Reality, and other technologies are being used to create more engaging and effective learning experiences, and to automate certain aspects of talent development, such as performance management and career development planning.
In addition, businesses will also need to focus on creating an inclusive and diverse workforce and providing opportunities for underrepresented groups to advance in their careers.
In summary, businesses that prioritize talent development in 2023 will be better equipped to attract and retain top talent and to build a workforce that is prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.
4. Tech x Traditional: In 2023, the use of technology is likely to continue to disrupt traditional industries and business models. Many industries have already begun to adopt new technologies, such as automation, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things, to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and create new revenue streams, The Fashion Industry is not left out of this disruption.
On the other hand, traditional businesses may struggle to adapt to these changes and may find it difficult to compete with companies that are more tech-savvy. However, traditional businesses can still find success in 2023 by embracing technology and using it to their advantage. By investing in digital technologies and automation, they can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and create new revenue streams.
Additionally, traditional businesses can also leverage their established reputation, customer base, and experience to their advantage in 2023. They can leverage their existing customer relationships to gain insight, and feedback and to drive sales. They can also leverage their experience and knowledge in the industry to provide more personalized service and product offering to customers.
In summary, while technology will continue to disrupt traditional industries in 2023, traditional businesses that are able to embrace technology and leverage their strengths can still find success.
5. Build Sustainably: In 2023, Sustainable fashion will become increasingly important as consumers become more aware of the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry. Sustainable fashion refers to the design, production, consumption, and disposal of clothing, shoes, and accessories in a way that minimizes their environmental impact and promotes social and economic sustainability.
Some of the key trends in sustainable fashion in 2023 include:
Consumers are also becoming more interested in purchasing second-hand or vintage clothing, and in supporting fashion brands that are transparent about their environmental and social impacts.
In summary, in 2023, sustainable fashion will become increasingly important as consumers become more aware of the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry. Businesses that prioritize sustainability in their design, production, and consumption practices will be better positioned to appeal to consumers' growing desire for sustainable and ethical fashion.
