The fascination of electromobility - building a network with vocational schools and universities

At the beginning of May, we at Phoenix Contact E-Mobility invited representatives from universities, universities of applied sciences and vocational schools from the region to our new networking and exchange format on the topic of electromobility.

With about 30 invited participants, our first networking event under the title "Fascination Electromobility" started on Thursday, May 04 in the Dialog Space of Phoenix Contact. Michael Heinemann , CEO Phoenix Contact E-Mobility GmbH, welcomed the guests to the evening and introduced the audience to the vision of the All Electric Society, in which affordable energy from renewable resources is available to everyone. Heinemann is convinced that this is more than just a vision: "Clean energy generation is a basic prerequisite, but electric mobility is also an important key for the All Electric Society. The world is gradually being electrified and Phoenix Contact will contribute to this with its products and solutions." The educational institutions in our region are also intensively dedicated to the future topics of electrification and mobility. On this evening, we offered the participants an aggregated platform to share knowledge and benefit together.

The power grid of the future should control itself

Prof. Jens Haubrock, University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld

Prof. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Haubrock from the Institute for Technical Energy Systems at Hochschule Bielefeld used our stage in Dialog Space to present results from his current research project. In doing so, he made it clear to the audience that an AI-based system for grid-serving control is necessary. For the energy transition, it is central that renewable energies are integrated into the electrical grids. To achieve this, power generation and consumption must be optimally coordinated. Electric vehicles in particular contribute to greater flexibility in the smart grid.

NeMo Paderborn - Transport solution for rural areas

Jonathan Behm, Managing Director, Neue Mobilit?t Paderborn e.V.

Jonathan Behm from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Universit?t Paderborn in his role as managing director presented the association Neue Mobilit?t Paderborn e.V. (NeMo for short) and its idea to revolutionize traffic in rural areas at our networking event. This is an on-demand system. The core element is a novel vehicle concept based on a swarm-like operation of electric light vehicles. Starting from individual starting points, low-cost and extremely energy- and resource-efficient driving modules (Cab) combine with a provider module (Pro) to form coupled units. The interconnection enables energy-efficient driving over long distances at higher speeds. In addition, the Cabs are charged by the Pro while driving, eliminating charging stops with passengers. Shortly before reaching their destinations, the Cabs disconnect from the network and fan out to their individual destinations.

Ralf D?hre, COO, Phoenix Contact E-Mobility GmbH

Our COO Ralf D?hre reported on business scaling in a dynamic market environment. He presented projects for mastering scaling, explained the importance of expanding a production network and emphasized the continuous build-up of development and quality know-how. In addition, he said, local resources and competencies need to be strengthened. "The spirit of Phoenix Contact is connecting - together with our team, we are developing new things for a future worth living," D?hre explained. Young people need to be inspired for technologies and technical contexts. Continuous educational work and a good network with educational institutions from the region contribute significantly to this, he says. A foundation stone for further cooperation and continuous exchange was laid that evening. Ideas for further exchange of experiences were collected on site and first concrete cooperations are planned. The event format will be repeated annually.

Great that you are working with electromobility. There is so much to learn and, surprisingly, there are few that take an overall perspective on electromobility. Some 60 minutes into this interview, Elon Musk says that to transform all US cars and heavy vehicles to electric drive power production needs to double. He also says that investments will be needed in all parts of power grids. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcI6FaaDp8g Not many have so far considered how much electricity and investments that will be needed. The current power production of the US amounts to 4000 TWh, or the equivalent of the generation from some 350 new nuclear reactors. For almost 20 years I have tried to inform decision makers and administrators around the world of the fact that the change to electromobility will involve large-scale investment. Not many have shown an interest. Electromobility is truly fascinating!!! I have so far written 7 internationally published books on the subject.
