The Fascination of Developing Modern Games for Retro Consoles

( vers?o em português deste artigo disponível aqui )

Greetings, fellow game developers and enthusiasts!

Have you ever wondered why someone would choose to create a modern game for a retro console? Indeed, in a world where technology advances seemingly faster than we can keep up, there's a group of people who decide to swim against the current.

I had two inspirations for writing this article. The first was a post by my friend Rodrigo Vertulo here on LinkedIn , recounting the adventures of developing his latest game, Skinny Marley, which was released this month for the Amiga line of computers. Secondly, the entire line of titles marketed by Bitnamic Software (in Brazil) / Teknamic (worldwide) – especially the excellent Alien Holocaust I and II for the Atari 2600, programmed by Fernando "Cabelo" Salvio.

My feeling is that these games are like a delicious homemade cake in a fast-food world. While everyone chases after ultra-realistic graphics and online gameplay, Rodrigo, Fernando, and many others choose to travel back in time and create something special for consoles that made history in the '80s and '90s. But why?

Nostalgia is one of the biggest attractions. Playing Skinny Marley on the Amiga or Alien Holocaust on the Atari is like meeting that childhood friend who always brings back good memories. The characteristic sounds, pixelated graphics, and charming simplicity of retro games have a unique appeal. For many developers, it’s a way to honor the golden age of video games, when every pixel was precious and every sound a work of art.

Moreover, developing for a retro console is a delightful challenge. Unlike modern consoles, where resources are practically unlimited, creating a game for these consoles requires creativity and ingenuity. It’s like trying to write a novel using only 140 characters. Every byte counts, and this forces developers to think outside the box. The limitation is, paradoxically, a liberation for creativity.

I would also venture to say that retro game development is not just a hobby but a culture. There is a vibrant community of fans and developers who share a common passion. Releasing a game like this is not just about the game itself but also about being part of an ongoing story and a community united by their love for retro. It's a way to leave your mark on a cultural legacy that spans generations.

There is something artisanal about creating for old consoles. It’s as if each game is a unique piece of digital craftsmanship. In a world where everything is mass-produced, retro games – much like indie games for modern platforms – offer a touch of exclusivity and authenticity.

Finally, looking deeper into the cases, I would say that beyond the emotional appeal and technical challenges, there are also market and financial reasons why developers choose retro consoles. The retro game market is a growing niche, fueled by collectors and enthusiasts willing to pay a good price for new releases. A visit to Bitnamic's online store reveals that much of their physical cartridge production is currently sold out, which suggests that these are already becoming collector's items, valued for their exclusivity and the dedication involved in their development. Additionally, with the help of crowdfunding platforms, many retro projects secure direct funding from passionate fans, reducing the financial risk for creators.

For all these reasons, the next time you come across a new game for an old console or computer, remember that behind every pixel is a passionate developer who decided to play with time and create something truly magical. It’s a reminder that despite all the technological advances, the essence of games – fun, challenge, and creativity – remains untouched.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to start my Amiga emulator and play some Skinny Marley. After all, nostalgia is my fuel too!

Big hug, and see you next week!
