FASCINATING WORLD OF WINE

I had the pleasure to join the world's No 1 international wine & spirits trade fare "ProWein" in Düsseldorf this week. I was overwhelmed by the size and the number of opportunities of the world of wine. What are the key take outs for me?
WINE IS INNOVATION
The creativity of products and packagings is tremendous, so it isn't surprising that wine very likely is the most fragmented FMCG business in the world. And there seems to be no limit. There are trend themes such as field blends, high altitude vineyards or orange wines continuing driving the innovation cycle. But there is rediscovery of old technologies - such as the use of earthen amphoras - adding interesting elements to the business as well.

There is a famous quote from Luis Fernando Oliverri, which brings the passion and creativity of wine makers straight to the point: "WINE IS THE ONLY ARTWORK YOU CAN DRINK!"
WINE IS PEOPLE AND RELATIONSHIPS
The diversity of people is reflecting the wine business. People from every corner of the world, with very different cultural backgrounds and languages. By the way, notice to myself: "Start investing time to learn Italian and / or Spanish :-)".
The passion for wine is uniting all these people. The pride for the heritage, often multiple generations in the family, can be felt in every conversation. It therefore doesn't come as a surprise, that relationships are often opening doors, which else would remain closed.
