Fascinating, but scary too
Just look at the economics. 10 years from now, to get the same level of transportation service, one could own a car for $9,000 a year or spend just $3,400 for self-driving cars from other companies. It means a $5,600 saving per year. It would rise to a whopping $7,300 if someone would subscribe to a pool-based model like Uber Pool, or Lyft Line as it would cost just $1,700 a year. Thus the economics of car ownership would be so unviable that more than 25% potential car buyers would not even think of purchasing cars. Who would buy cars in future then? Only the businesses, hobbyists or the super-rich, not common people. Imagine what a radical change it would bring to industries like automobile, energy etc.
Last week on May 4, the technology think-tank Rethinkx published this detail report on the latest development of self-driving car technologies. It's not only fascinating, but scary too. Are we looking at millions of disappearing jobs?
