No. You really did read the title correctly, but please let me explain…

We’re not being rude. Really, we’re not. It’s just something that made us both laugh and be intrigued when we recently performed some keyword research for a client.

Our client, Clarissa Hulse is a purveyor of gorgeous home-wares; duvets, cushions, towels, sheets, curtain fabric etc. and poignantly to this blog, pillows.

While doing our usual, extensive keyword research, we were pulling metrics on the term “pillow”. One of the related keywords we were looking at was “pink pillows”. It is after all, one of the colours they sell. When we looked at the list of hundreds of variations of that keyword, we spotted the phrase – and here it is again…

Yep, your eyes are not deceiving you, that exact phrase is put into Google (just in the UK) 140 times A MONTH!

Before we go onto what this is about, you may be wondering how we know that. Well, we use premium SEO and keyword research tools which deep dive in to the database of known search terms at google and show us not only how many searches happen per month in a particular region, but also how difficult that search term is to rank for and how likely people are to click a result that comes up. We do not use Google Adwords data for this, that is heavily skewed towards PPC advertising, so won’t give you the right data for Organic search engine optimisation.

This data (which we refer to as keyword metrics) is an essential part of any SEO campaign and allows us to advise our clients on which keywords they should be targeting on their site and what we will optimise the site for to bring traffic to it. So we know that if 140 people look for “fart on pillow pink eye“, that would be a good keyword to target. Well OK, not in this instance for this client, but how did you land on this blog post?

Anyway, what is that search about and what did we do?

Well I can tell you right away that I searched for it in a private browsing window, I don’t want stuff like that coming up in my search history! And when I did, I really did laugh.

Apparently there is an urban myth which says that if you fart on a pillow, then sleep on it, you can get conjunctivitis.

Although we’re no doctors, we can assure you that from our own Googling on this matter, it’s not true, you can’t get pink eye from farting on a pillow. However, you should be ashamed of yourself if you are doing that and you’re very likely single. Head over to match.com once you have adjusted your behaviour.
